Terminals
Which terminal is yours?
Good news: Kochi’s terminals are genuinely easy compared to India’s bigger airports. There are technically three, but most travellers only ever need two — and they’re a short, pleasant walk apart.
T1 and T3 are just a few hundred metres apart, connected by a covered walkway — about a 5–7 minute walk. This is one of the friendliest terminal layouts of any major Indian airport; no shuttle bus required.
Fully renovated and modernised — check-in counters, security, dining and shops, all functional though smaller in scale than T3.
Self-service: automated kiosks let domestic passengers check in their own luggage to save time.
Now the “Executive Pavilion” — handles VIP and private chartered flights only. Regular travellers won’t use this terminal; it’s mentioned here only so you’re not confused if you see it referenced elsewhere.
Opened 2017, built in traditional Kerala style, and the largest/most modern terminal here. Look for the nine life-size elephant statues in the departures hall — inspired by the Thrissur Pooram festival, and a genuinely memorable airport detail.
Why so many Gulf flights? Kerala has one of India’s largest expatriate workforces in the Middle East — on any given day you’ll find multiple Dubai departures alone, which keeps fares on Gulf routes competitively priced.
Terminal roles at COK have shifted over the years as the airport expanded — always confirm the terminal printed on your ticket or the airline’s app before heading out.
Flying out
Departures
Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic. Many of COK’s Gulf-bound international flights depart late at night — if yours does, factor in that ground transport options thin out after midnight.
Before security
- Entry: boarding pass/ticket plus photo ID checked at terminal entry gates.
- Luggage wrapping is available at the departure gates of both T1 and T3 — genuinely popular here given the volume of check-in baggage on Gulf routes.
- Self-check-in kiosks at T1 let domestic passengers skip the counter entirely.
Good to know
- T3’s retail zone is extensive — international brands, spirits, and Kerala specialties — allow time if you plan to shop.
- Quiet prayer and meditation spaces are available within the security hold areas of the international terminal.
- Since T1↔T3 is a short walk, double-check your terminal is correct rather than assuming — the walk is easy, but wasted time still costs you at the gate.
Landing here
Arrivals
International arrivals at T3: immigration, baggage reclaim, customs (green channel if nothing to declare), then the arrivals hall — the arrivals hall sits on the ground floor, departures on the upper floor. Domestic arrivals go straight to reclaim.
In the arrivals hall (T3)
- SIM cards: telecom counters in international arrivals — bring your passport and a photo.
- Foreign exchange counters are located in both the arrival and departure halls of the international terminal.
- Paid luggage storage and lockers are available in T3 for transit passengers.
Meeting someone?
- Greeters wait outside the terminal exits — entry to the building requires a ticket.
- Given how many flights land late at night from the Gulf, arrivals can be genuinely busy at 1–3 AM — plan pickup timing accordingly.
At the border
Immigration & baggage rules
Rules differ by who you are. Here’s the short version — treat it as orientation, not legal advice, and check official Indian government sources for your specific situation.
Indian citizens
- Immigration applies to international trips only — passport, boarding pass, and destination visa where needed.
- Fast Track Immigration (FTI-TTP) e-gates are being rolled out at major Indian airports — check current availability at COK before relying on it.
- Returning residents get a duty-free allowance (general goods up to a rupee limit, plus limited alcohol and tobacco) — check current CBIC limits before shopping abroad. This matters a lot at COK given how many passengers are returning NRIs from the Gulf.
OCI holders & PRs abroad
- OCI card holders use visa-free entry with a valid foreign passport + OCI card.
- Indian-origin travellers with foreign PR (e.g. US green card) but no OCI need a visa/e-visa like other foreign nationals.
Foreign nationals
- e-Visa holders: follow the dedicated e-Visa lanes at T3 immigration — carry the printed ETA approval.
- Regular visas use the standard foreigner queues; complete the arrival card from the plane or the hall.
- Customs: green channel if nothing to declare; currency above prescribed limits (foreign cash beyond ~US$5,000, or higher total instruments) must be declared.
Allowances and visa rules change — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Comfort & cash
Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange
Lounges
- Domestic lounges (T1) — accessible via card benefits, Priority Pass, or walk-in (~₹1,200–2,000); hot meals including Kerala-style dishes, beverages, Wi-Fi.
- International lounges (T3) — larger, some with shower facilities. Given how many flights depart late at night, these genuinely function as rest stops before a red-eye, not just a perk. Access via cards, Priority Pass, airline loyalty programmes, or walk-in.
- Family lounge and a separate premium lounge for business class are also available.
- Card note: bank lounge programmes changed across India in late 2025 — confirm your card’s current access before relying on it.
ATMs & forex
- Bank ATMs are available throughout the terminals.
- Multiple forex counters operate in both the arrival and departure halls of T3 — airport rates carry a premium, so change only what you need.
- India runs heavily on UPI; a working international card plus a small cash reserve covers most travellers.
Inside the terminal
Shopping, restaurants & restrooms
Shopping
T3’s retail zone covers international brands, spirits, and — genuinely worth seeking out — Kerala specialties like spices, coffee, and cashews, sold right in the terminal.
Food
Before you leave Kerala, try the local dishes at the airport itself: appam, idli-sambar, masala dosa, and banana chips for a quick snack. T3’s airside food courts (after security) have the widest selection, mixing Indian and international options; landside cafés serve those seeing off or welcoming passengers.
Restrooms & essentials
Restrooms are frequent and well-signed with accessible facilities. The airport also has a 24/7 medical facility with doctors and ambulance service, private nursing/diaper-changing rooms, and quiet prayer and meditation spaces within the security hold areas.
Between terminals
Transferring between terminals
The easy news
T1 and T3 are a genuine 5–7 minute walk apart via a covered walkway — no shuttle bus, no long transfer. This is one of the more traveller-friendly layouts among India’s major airports.
Connecting flights
International→domestic: you still clear immigration, collect bags, and check in again — keep at least 2.5–3 hours. Given the number of late-night Gulf arrivals connecting to early-morning domestic flights, this timing genuinely matters at COK.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation
Bus
- The Blue Line / Pavan Doot feeder bus covers the city connection in about 60 minutes including transfer — a budget-friendly, if slower, option.
- KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport) buses run at ₹80–150 — the cheapest way in.
Taxi & ride-hailing
- Prepaid taxi counters in the arrivals hall — fares are fixed by destination and displayed on boards, roughly ₹800–1,200 to Ernakulam city centre.
- Common destinations: Ernakulam (city centre), Fort Kochi, Marine Drive, and the main hotel areas.
- Uber/Ola also operate from the airport.
No metro to the airport (yet)
- Kochi Metro exists and is excellent within the city, but does not currently extend to the airport — road transport is required for the full journey.
- Journey time: 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and mode.

Got a long layover?
Attractions near the airport
Under 40 min away
- Kalady — birthplace of the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, a short drive from the airport.
- Local backwater edges — even close to the airport, glimpses of Kerala’s famous canals begin.
Worth it with 6+ hours
- Fort Kochi — colonial streets, the Chinese fishing nets, art galleries and cafés; Kochi’s essential visit, ~45–60 min.
- Mattancherry & Jew Town — spice markets and antique shops beside Fort Kochi.
- Marine Drive, Ernakulam — the city’s waterfront promenade.
- Alleppey backwaters — a genuine houseboat cruise, but realistically a full-day trip, not a layover.
Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit. With many flights landing at odd hours, confirm your driver/taxi is available before committing to a layover trip.
Sacred Kochi
Temples, churches, mosques, synagogue & more
Kochi has one of India’s most remarkable multi-faith heritages — worth calling out specifically, since few Indian cities pack this much religious history into one walkable area.
Fort Kochi’s historic cluster
- St. Francis Church — one of the oldest European-built churches in India; Vasco da Gama was originally buried here.
- Santa Cruz Basilica — striking Gothic-style Catholic basilica.
- Paradesi Synagogue, Mattancherry — one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth, dating to 1568, at the heart of historic Jew Town.
- Cheraman Juma Masjid (a short drive further, in Kodungallur) — widely regarded as one of the very first mosques in India, with roots going back over a thousand years.
Elsewhere in the city
- Ernakulam Shiva Temple — a major Hindu temple in the heart of Ernakulam.
- Kalady — associated with Adi Shankaracharya, a significant pilgrimage point for Hindus, en route from the airport.
When things go wrong
Lost & found and airline help
Lost something at the airport?
- Report to the terminal’s Lost & Found desk before leaving if possible, or check CIAL’s official website (cial.aero) for the current process.
- Left something on the plane? That goes to your airline, not the airport — contact the airline directly.
- Airport information desks in both T1 and T3 can direct you to the nearest help point.
Airline customer service
Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:
- Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
- IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 chat in-app)
- SpiceJet — spicejet.com → Contact Us
- Akasa Air — akasaair.com → Support
- Gulf/international carriers: use the airline’s own site, or their T3 ticketing counters.
Health & emergencies
Hospitals near the airport
At the airport
The terminal has a 24/7 medical facility with qualified doctors and ambulance service — ask any airport staff member for the nearest medical room. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112 (ambulance also via 102/108).
Major hospitals within reach
- Aster Medcity, Kochi — leading private multi-speciality hospital, ~40–45 min toward the city.
- Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi — well-regarded private hospital, similar distance.
- Local hospitals in Angamaly/Nedumbassery — closer options for non-critical needs near the airport itself.
Diplomatic help
Consulates in Kochi
Given Kerala’s massive Gulf-connected population, several countries maintain honorary consuls in Kochi specifically for community and emergency support — worth knowing given how much of this airport’s traffic is Gulf-bound.
In Kochi
Look for honorary consulates for Gulf states and other nations with strong Kerala ties, generally based in Ernakulam — check current listings before you travel, as honorary consul postings change more often than full consulates.
If Kochi can’t help
- Fuller consular services for most nationalities are in Chennai or Mumbai.
- For a lost passport you’ll typically also need a police report (Kerala Police supports online lost-property complaints).
- In a genuine emergency, your country’s Delhi embassy can coordinate remotely even without a local consul.
Stocking up
Groceries & essentials nearby
Physical stores
- Angamaly and Nedumbassery — pharmacies and convenience stores a short drive from the terminal.
- For a fuller supermarket, expect a 30–40 minute drive toward Ernakulam.
The shortcut: delivery apps
Staying at an airport-area hotel? Quick-commerce apps — Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart — deliver groceries, toiletries, chargers, and medicine, with decent coverage in the built-up areas around Nedumbassery and Angamaly.
Off-airport dining
Restaurants & bars near the airport
Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & restaurants section above.
Hotel dining & bars
Ramada Kochi Airport and similar Nedumbassery-area hotels welcome non-guests and are the reliable choice for a proper meal, given how limited independent dining is right around the terminal.
Don’t skip: Kerala cuisine
If your layover allows a trip toward Angamaly or Ernakulam, proper Kerala food — fish curry with rice, appam and stew, or a full traditional sadya thali — is worth prioritising over generic multi-cuisine options.
Worth the drive: Fort Kochi
Fort Kochi’s cafés and restaurants (many with waterfront views near the Chinese fishing nets) are genuinely excellent, but 45–60 minutes away — realistic only with a long layover.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How many terminals does Kochi Airport have, and which one do I need?
Three, but most travellers only use two: T1 for domestic flights and T3 for international. T2 is a business jet terminal most tourists never see.
Are T1 and T3 far apart?
No — just a few hundred metres, connected by a covered walkway, about a 5–7 minute walk. No shuttle needed.
Is there a metro to Kochi Airport?
Not yet. Kochi Metro is excellent within the city but doesn’t currently reach the airport — you’ll need a taxi, ride-hail, or bus for the full ~28 km, 45–60 minute journey.
Why does Kochi Airport have so many Gulf flights?
Kerala has one of India’s largest expatriate workforces in the Middle East, so COK runs an unusually dense schedule of Dubai, Doha, and other Gulf routes relative to the airport’s size.
How early should I arrive?
3 hours before international flights, 2 hours before domestic.
What’s special about Kochi Airport?
It’s the world’s first fully solar-powered major airport, and T3’s departures hall features nine life-size elephant statues inspired by Kerala’s Thrissur Pooram festival.
