Nagpur Airport (NAG) Guide

Before security

• Entry: boarding pass/ticket plus photo ID checked at terminal entry gates.
• 20 check-in counters and 20 immigration counters serve the whole terminal — rarely a long wait given the airport’s traffic volume.
• X-ray baggage scanners cover both domestic and international sides.

Good to know

• The departure lounge (post-security) has seating, retail shops, a food court, and lounge access all in one compact, easy-to-navigate space.
• With GMR’s modernisation underway, expect gradual upgrades to processes and facilities — worth checking the official site for the latest before you fly.

In the arrivals hall

• Free trolley services are provided, with escorts available to help carry luggage to the trolley area — a nice, low-key touch of service.
• Baggage conveyor systems and passenger bridges with visual docking guidance are standard at the terminal.

Meeting someone?

• Greeters wait outside the terminal exits — entry to the building requires a ticket.
• Given the airport’s compact size, pickup logistics here are generally simpler than at India’s larger hubs.

Indian citizens

• Immigration applies to international trips only — passport, boarding pass, and destination visa where needed.
• Fast Track Immigration (FTI-TTP) e-gates are being rolled out at major Indian airports — check current availability at NAG before relying on it, especially given the recent operator change.
• Returning residents get a duty-free allowance (general goods up to a rupee limit, plus limited alcohol and tobacco) — check current CBIC limits before shopping abroad.

OCI holders & PRs abroad

• OCI card holders use visa-free entry with a valid foreign passport + OCI card.
• Indian-origin travellers with foreign PR (e.g. US green card) but no OCI need a visa/e-visa like other foreign nationals.

Foreign nationals

• e-Visa holders: follow the dedicated e-Visa lanes at immigration — carry the printed ETA approval.
• Regular visas use the standard foreigner queues; complete the arrival card from the plane or the hall.
• Customs: green channel if nothing to declare; currency above prescribed limits (foreign cash beyond ~US$5,000, or higher total instruments) must be declared.

Lounges

• Lounge access is available within the post-security departure area — typically via card benefits, Priority Pass, airline premium cabins, or walk-in.
• Card note: bank lounge programmes changed across India in late 2025 — confirm your card’s current access before relying on it.

ATMs & forex

• ATMs are available in the terminal.
• Currency exchange services serve international passengers — airport rates carry a premium, so change only what you need.
• India runs heavily on UPI; a working international card plus a small cash reserve covers most travellers.

Shopping

Retail is modest compared to India’s larger airports — bookstores, jewellery, and clothing shops are available, with a small selection of Nagpur oranges and local snacks worth grabbing if you spot them (Nagpur is famously nicknamed the “Orange City”).

Food

Food outlets serve snacks and takeaway options around the clock. Look for Vidarbha-region specialties like saoji cuisine (a distinctively spicy Nagpuri style) if available, as a genuine local alternative to standard fast food.

Restrooms & essentials

Restrooms are available with standard accessible facilities throughout the compact terminal.

The good news

Because it’s one compact, integrated building, there’s no shuttle or long walk between domestic and international sides — genuinely one of the easier airports in India for a self-managed connection.

Connecting flights

International→domestic: you still clear immigration, collect bags, and check in again — keep at least 2–2.5 hours, on the shorter side given NAG’s smaller scale and quicker processing times.

Metro

The Nagpur Metro Orange Line has an Airport South station close to the terminal — a fast, predictable option into the city, and a genuine convenience many smaller Indian airports don’t yet have.

Taxi & ride-hailing

• Prepaid taxi counter just outside the arrivals exit — fixed fares, roughly ₹150–350 to most city locations; always collect your receipt.
• Uber/Ola are widely available with designated pickup points, typically comparable to or slightly cheaper than prepaid taxis.

Bus & rail

• Aapli Bus city bus network has routes passing near the airport — the most budget-friendly, if slowest, option.
• Nagpur Railway Station is about 6–9.5 km away, roughly a 20–30 minute drive.

Under 30 min away

• Zero Mile Stone — the marker denoting the geographical centre of India, a quirky and quick photo stop in the city.
• Deekshabhoomi — a monumental stupa marking the site where Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (the airport’s namesake) converted to Buddhism with hundreds of thousands of followers in 1956; one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India, ~20–25 min.

Worth it with more time

• Pench Tiger Reserve — the forest that inspired Kipling’s “The Jungle Book,” roughly 2–2.5 hours by road; a full-day trip, not a short layover.
• Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve — Maharashtra’s oldest and largest national park, similarly a longer trip (~2.5–3 hrs).
• Ramtek Temple — a historic hilltop temple complex associated with Lord Rama, ~45 min.

Closest to the airport

• Deekshabhoomi — arguably Nagpur’s most historically significant site of any kind, marking Dr. Ambedkar’s mass conversion to Buddhism; a large, serene stupa complex and a place of deep meaning given the airport’s own name.

Nagpur’s icons

• Ramtek Temple — an ancient hilltop temple complex linked to the Ramayana, ~45 min from the airport.
• Dragon Palace Temple — a strikingly modern Buddhist temple built with support from Japanese Buddhist organisations.
• Ganesh Tekdi Mandir — a popular hilltop Ganesha temple in the city.

At the airport

Basic medical assistance is available on-site — ask any airport staff member for the nearest facility. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112 (ambulance also via 102/108).

Major hospitals within ~20–30 min

• AIIMS Nagpur — a premier government medical institution.
• Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur — well-regarded private multi-speciality hospital.
• Orange City Hospital — established private hospital in the city.

In Nagpur

A small number of honorary consulates may be present, generally reflecting business ties to the MIHAN-SEZ project — check current listings before you travel.

If Nagpur can’t help

• Fuller consular services for most nationalities are in Mumbai.
• For a lost passport you’ll typically also need a police report (Maharashtra Police supports online lost-property complaints).
• In a genuine emergency, your country’s Delhi embassy can coordinate remotely even without a local consul.

Physical stores

• Pharmacies and convenience stores are available along the airport road and in the nearby MIHAN-SEZ area.
• For a fuller supermarket, expect a 15–20 minute drive toward central Nagpur.

The shortcut: delivery apps

Staying near the airport? Quick-commerce apps — Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart — deliver groceries, toiletries, chargers, and medicine, with decent coverage across Nagpur’s built-up areas.

Hotel dining

Airport-road business hotels offer reliable dining options minutes from the terminal, ideal for a quick, proper meal without heading into the city.

Don’t skip: Saoji cuisine

Nagpur’s own saoji food style — famously fiery, meat-heavy Vidarbha cuisine — is a genuine local specialty worth seeking out over generic multi-cuisine restaurants if you have any spice tolerance.

The local sweet: Orange City treats

As the “Orange City,” Nagpur is famous for orange-based sweets and drinks — a fun, genuinely local thing to try that you won’t easily find elsewhere in India.
