Bhubaneswar Airport (BBI) Guide

Before security

• Entry: boarding pass/ticket plus photo ID checked at terminal entry gates.
• T1 has 5 security check booths handling up to 400 passengers each at arrival and departure — generally efficient given the airport’s size.
• Free Wi-Fi — no registration required, a nice convenience most Indian airports don’t offer this simply.

Good to know

• Prayer rooms and designated smoking areas are available at the airport.
• Transfer desks are available for passengers connecting between flights.
• T1’s terminal doubles as a small showcase of Odisha handicrafts — worth a look even if you’re not shopping.

In the arrivals hall

• Information boards and floor markings guide passengers to the taxi waiting area — genuinely well signed for a mid-sized airport.
• A waiting zone with ample seating is available in the arrival building for those meeting passengers.
• Duty-free shops are available for arriving/departing international passengers.

Meeting someone?

• Greeters wait in the arrival building’s seating area — entry to secure zones requires a ticket.
• Both taxi and app-based ride pickup points are close to the arrivals exit.

Indian citizens

• Immigration applies to international trips only — passport, boarding pass, and destination visa where needed.
• Fast Track Immigration (FTI-TTP) e-gates are being rolled out at major Indian airports — check current availability at BBI before relying on it, given its smaller international terminal.
• Returning residents get a duty-free allowance (general goods up to a rupee limit, plus limited alcohol and tobacco) — check current CBIC limits before shopping abroad.

OCI holders & PRs abroad

• OCI card holders use visa-free entry with a valid foreign passport + OCI card.
• Indian-origin travellers with foreign PR (e.g. US green card) but no OCI need a visa/e-visa like other foreign nationals.

Foreign nationals

• e-Visa holders: follow the dedicated e-Visa lanes at T2 immigration — carry the printed ETA approval.
• Regular visas use the standard foreigner queues; complete the arrival card from the plane or the hall.
• Customs: green channel if nothing to declare; currency above prescribed limits (foreign cash beyond ~US$5,000, or higher total instruments) must be declared.

Lounges

• Lounges are available at BBI for pre-flight and between-flight relaxation — access typically via card benefits, Priority Pass, airline premium cabins, or walk-in payment.
• Card note: bank lounge programmes changed across India in late 2025 — confirm your card’s current access before relying on it.

ATMs & forex

• ATMs are available throughout the terminal.
• Currency exchange services serve international passengers — airport rates carry a premium, so change only what you need.
• India runs heavily on UPI; a working international card plus a small cash reserve covers most travellers.

Shopping

T1 stands out for its handloom and handicraft stalls — genuine Odisha craftsmanship (textiles, Pattachitra art, and similar) sold right in the terminal, alongside bookstores and gift shops. T2 has duty-free for international passengers.

Food

A mix of food kiosks and restaurants across the terminal — worth seeking out Odia specialties like dalma, chhena poda (a distinctive baked cheese dessert), and pakhala if available, rather than defaulting to generic fast food.

Restrooms & essentials

Restrooms are frequent and well-signed with accessible facilities. The airport also has prayer rooms, designated smoking areas, and free Wi-Fi with no registration required.

The good news

The February 2024 link building connects T1 and T2 directly, meaning international passengers can now reach T1’s boarding bridges without a separate shuttle or long walk outside — a genuine improvement over the airport’s earlier layout.

Connecting flights

International→domestic: you still clear immigration, collect bags, and check in again — keep at least 2.5–3 hours, especially given T2’s smaller scale relative to India’s bigger international terminals.

The airport is genuinely close

At just 3–6 km from the city centre, BBI is one of the most conveniently located major airports in India — most hotels and attractions are a short ride away.

Bus & taxi

• CRUT “Mo Bus” — Bhubaneswar’s public bus service, budget-friendly at roughly ₹20–50, connects the airport to various parts of the city.
• 24-hour prepaid taxi counter just outside the arrivals hall — the straightforward, scam-proof option.
• Uber/Ola and local auto-rickshaws also operate from the airport.

Rail

• Bhubaneswar Railway Station is just 4–5 km away — a short drive if you’re continuing by train.
• Cuttack Railway Station is about 26 km away, for those heading to Odisha’s twin city.

Under 30 min away

• Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves — ancient rock-cut Jain caves dating back over 2,000 years, ~20–25 min.
• Dhauli — the site of Emperor Ashoka’s famous edicts and a serene Buddhist peace pagoda, ~20 min.
• Nandankanan Zoological Park — a well-known zoo and botanical garden, ~30 min.

Worth it with 6+ hours

• Puri — home to the Jagannath Temple, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, and a beach town, about 1–1.5 hours away.
• Konark Sun Temple — the UNESCO World Heritage 13th-century sun temple, roughly 1.5 hours away, often combined with a Puri trip.

Closest to the airport

• Lingaraj Temple — Bhubaneswar’s most important temple, a stunning example of Kalinga architecture and one of the oldest temples in the city, ~15–20 min.
• Bindu Sarovar — the sacred lake beside Lingaraj Temple, considered to contain water from every holy river in India.

Worth the trip further out

• Jagannath Temple, Puri — one of Hinduism’s four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, ~1–1.5 hrs; note that non-Hindus are traditionally not permitted inside the main temple.
• Konark Sun Temple — the UNESCO-listed 13th-century sun temple shaped like a colossal chariot, ~1.5 hrs.
• ISKCON Bhubaneswar — a well-known Krishna temple within the city.

• BBI is operated by the Airports Authority of India — report lost items at the terminal’s lost & found desk, or check aai.aero/en/airports/bhubaneswar for the current process.
• Left something on the plane? That goes to your airline, not the airport — contact the airline directly.

Basic medical assistance is available on-site — ask any airport staff member for the nearest facility. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112 (ambulance also via 102/108).

Major hospitals within ~20 min

• AIIMS Bhubaneswar — one of India’s premier government medical institutions.
• Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar — flagship of India’s largest private hospital chain.
• KIMS Hospital — well-regarded private multi-speciality hospital in the city.

In Bhubaneswar

A limited number of honorary consulates may be present for countries with specific trade or cultural ties to Odisha — check current listings before you travel, since Bhubaneswar has fewer consular resources than India’s larger metros.

If Bhubaneswar can’t help

• Fuller consular services for most nationalities are in Kolkata, the nearest major diplomatic hub for Eastern India.
• For a lost passport you’ll typically also need a police report (Odisha Police supports online lost-property complaints).
• In a genuine emergency, your country’s Delhi embassy can coordinate remotely even without a local consul.

Physical stores

• Given the airport’s central location, city-centre pharmacies and supermarkets are just 15–20 minutes away.
• Big Bazaar-style supermarkets and local stores are well distributed across Bhubaneswar.

The shortcut: delivery apps

Staying near the airport or city centre? Quick-commerce apps — Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart — deliver groceries, toiletries, chargers, and medicine, with solid coverage across central Bhubaneswar.

Hotel dining

Mayfair Lagoon and other central Bhubaneswar hotels offer some of the city’s best dining and bar options, a short ride from the airport.

Don’t skip: Odia cuisine

Odisha’s food culture is distinct from its neighbours — seek out dalma (lentil-vegetable stew), pakhala (fermented rice), and chhena poda (a caramelized cheese dessert genuinely unique to the region) rather than defaulting to generic North or South Indian menus.

Worth the trip: Puri’s seafood

If your layover stretches to Puri, the beach town’s seafood shacks and local Odia restaurants make the detour worthwhile alongside the temple visit.
