Current weather at CJB
Loading current conditions…
Live conditions via OpenWeatherMap. Coimbatore sits at about 400 m in the Palakkad Gap, so it’s noticeably cooler and breezier than Chennai year-round. If you’re heading up to Ooty, expect a 10–15°C drop — pack a jacket even in summer.
Terminal
One terminal, domestic and international
Coimbatore has a single integrated terminal handling both domestic and international flights, on Avinashi Road at Peelamedu, about 10 km east of the city centre. There is no wrong building to arrive at — and because there’s only one concourse, the walk from check-in to the aircraft is one of the shortest at any Indian international airport.
CJB is the gateway to far more than Coimbatore. It’s the nearest major airport for the Nilgiris (Ooty, Coonoor), Tirupur’s knitwear belt, Pollachi, Valparai and the Palakkad side of Kerala — which is why its catchment is much larger than the city’s size suggests.
Chennai is the busiest route, with Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad close behind, plus links to Ahmedabad, Goa, Guwahati and other cities.
IndiGo treats Coimbatore as a focus city, so it operates the large majority of departures here — useful if you want a single-airline itinerary with through-checked bags.
A real international operation with immigration, customs and duty-free — small, but growing faster than the domestic side.
Carriers have included Scoot, Air Arabia and SriLankan Airlines alongside the Indian airlines. Routes shift between schedule seasons — check before booking around one.
A new terminal and a major modernisation programme have been announced by AAI, with a long-term target of handling many times the current traffic.
Land acquisition has been the constraint. Until it completes, expect the existing terminal — compact, and tight during the evening bank.
Airline rosters and international routes at Coimbatore change every schedule season. Confirm your carrier and timings on the airline’s own app before travelling.
Flying out
Departures
Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic. The terminal is small enough that this is generous most of the day — but the late-evening international bank and the early-morning domestic wave both fill the check-in hall quickly.
Before security
- Entry: a printed or mobile boarding pass and photo ID are checked at the terminal doors.
- Check-in counters typically close 60 minutes before international departures and 45 minutes before domestic.
- Coming from Ooty or Tirupur? The drive is the risk, not the airport. Ooty is 3–3.5 hours on a winding ghat road — leave far earlier than the distance suggests.
Gates & timing
- One concourse — the walk from security to the furthest gate is a few minutes at most.
- Seating airside is limited when two international departures overlap; arrive fed rather than expecting a comfortable wait.
- Gate assignments are shown on screens after security and can change — check the boards.
Landing here
Arrivals
International arrivals clear immigration, then baggage reclaim, then customs before the exit. Domestic arrivals go straight to the belt. Either way you’re out fast — this is a compact terminal with two baggage belts.
In the arrivals hall
- Prepaid taxi counter near the baggage exit, with fixed slab fares to Coimbatore, Tirupur, Pollachi, Ooty, Coonoor, Palakkad and Mettupalayam.
- ATMs are available; forex is limited, so don’t count on changing large amounts here.
- SIM cards: easier to buy in the city than at the airport — bring your passport and a photo.
Meeting someone?
- Greeters wait outside the terminal doors; the forecourt is small and the pickup lane moves quickly.
- App-cab pickup bays are opposite the arrivals exit on the Avinashi Road frontage.
- Because the airport is inside the city, most Coimbatore pickups take 20–30 minutes.
At the border
Immigration & baggage rules
Coimbatore handles international arrivals and departures, so full immigration and customs apply. Rules differ by who you are — treat this as orientation, not legal advice.
Indian citizens & NRIs
- Immigration applies to international sectors only — carry your passport and any visa for the destination.
- CJB serves a large Gulf and Southeast Asia working diaspora; returning residents get a duty-free allowance, so check current CBIC limits before shopping abroad.
- Gold is the most commonly misjudged item on this route — allowances are strictly limited and enforced. Declare rather than risk it.
Foreign nationals
- e-Visa holders can enter through Coimbatore — carry the printed ETA approval. See our how to apply guide.
- Regular visas use the standard foreigner queues; complete the arrival card handed out on the plane.
- Long-stay visitors may need FRRO registration — see our FRRO guide.
Customs & baggage
- Green channel if nothing to declare; foreign cash above roughly US$5,000, or higher totals in instruments, must be declared.
- Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in cabin baggage only, never in checked bags.
- Domestic hand baggage is generally one cabin bag up to 7 kg plus a small personal item.
Allowances and visa rules change — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Comfort & cash
Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange
Lounges
- Coimbatore has a small lounge offering rather than the multi-lounge spread of a metro airport.
- Access is typically via credit-card lounge programmes or pay-per-use at the door.
- Card access changed across India in late 2025 — many banks moved to direct partnerships with spend conditions. Confirm your card still qualifies before relying on it.
ATMs & forex
- ATMs are available landside; airside options are limited, so draw cash before security.
- Forex counters exist for the international sectors but rates carry the usual airport premium — exchange only what you need.
- Tamil Nadu runs heavily on UPI; a working card plus a small cash reserve covers everything else.
Inside the terminal
Shopping, food & restrooms
Shopping
Modest: a duty-free on the international side, convenience retail, books and a few outlets carrying local products — Kovai cotton, filter coffee powder and handicrafts. Prices run well above city rates.
Food
Cafés and quick-service counters rather than restaurants, with strong South Indian options — idli, dosa, vada and proper filter coffee. Budget ₹150–400 for something light. Pre-security outlets are generally cheaper.
Restrooms & essentials
Clean and well-signed, with accessible facilities, baby-care provision and drinking-water points. Free Wi-Fi is available; connection usually needs an SMS code, so an Indian mobile number helps.
Extra help
Assistance & accessibility
Wheelchairs & reduced mobility
Free wheelchair assistance is a regulatory requirement at Indian airports. Request it when booking, at least 48 hours ahead, and confirm at check-in. The short single-concourse layout makes CJB one of the easier Indian airports for anyone with limited mobility.
First-time flyers
A large share of the Gulf and Southeast Asia traffic here is first-time or infrequent flyers travelling for work. Airline ground staff will walk someone through check-in and security if asked — flag it at the counter, when there’s still time.
Families
Baby-care facilities are available and families with infants are usually called for priority boarding. Strollers can be gate-checked and collected at the aircraft door on arrival.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation
The airport sits on Avinashi Road at Peelamedu, roughly 10 km from the centre and about 11 km from Coimbatore Junction railway station. Most city journeys take 20–35 minutes.
Taxi & ride-hailing
- Prepaid taxi counter inside arrivals — fixed slab fares, drivers assigned by queue, no negotiation. The simplest option.
- Ola, Uber and Rapido all operate, with pickup bays opposite the arrivals exit.
- Waits get longer during festival surges and the late international bank.
Bus, auto & rail
- Frequent city buses run from Gandhipuram central bus station, and from Singanallur and Ukkadam.
- Autos are widely available 24 hours — agree the fare first or use an app.
- Rail: Coimbatore Junction is ~11 km; Peelamedu and Singanallur are the nearest small stations.
Onward to the hills
- Ooty — 85–90 km, about 3–3.5 hours via Mettupalayam and 36 hairpin bends.
- Coonoor ~70 km · Tirupur ~50 km · Pollachi ~40 km · Palakkad ~55 km.
- The Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam is the scenic way up — book well ahead.

Hotels near Coimbatore Airport
Because the airport is inside the city, the Avinashi Road corridor running from Peelamedu towards the centre is effectively the airport hotel strip — business hotels, malls and restaurants along one road.

Budget
Tap any hotel on the map for current ratings and prices. Rooms fill during the textile trade-fair season and around Pongal — book ahead.
Got a long layover?
Attractions near the airport
Under 30 min away
- Brookefields and Fun Republic malls — the easy air-conditioned option on Avinashi Road.
- Gass Forest Museum — a colonial-era natural history collection, quirky and quiet.
- VOC Park & Zoo and the Race Course promenade for a walk.
Worth it with a full day
- Isha Yoga Center and the 112-ft Adiyogi statue at the foot of the Velliangiri Hills, ~35 km.
- Siruvani Falls and Waterfalls in the Western Ghats, ~35–40 km (permits apply seasonally).
- Valparai — tea estates and 40 hairpin bends, ~100 km; a full day, not a layover.
- Ooty and Coonoor — 3+ hours each way, so an overnight rather than a stopover.
Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit. Anything in the Ghats takes far longer than the distance suggests — don’t attempt the hills on a layover.
Sacred Kongu Nadu
Temples, churches & mosques
In and around the city
- Marudhamalai Murugan Temple — hilltop temple to Murugan, one of Coimbatore’s defining landmarks, ~20 km.
- Perur Pateeswarar Temple — a Chola-era Shiva temple with remarkable stone carving, ~10 km west.
- Eachanari Vinayagar Temple — famous for its large Ganesha idol, on the Pollachi road.
- Koniamman Temple — the city’s guardian deity, in the old centre.
Further afield
- Isha Yoga Center — the Dhyanalinga and Adiyogi draw visitors from across the world; open to all, with a dress code.
- Palani — a major Murugan pilgrimage hill temple, ~110 km, especially busy at Thaipusam.
- Coimbatore also has long-established churches and mosques serving its sizeable Christian and Muslim communities, mostly in the Town Hall and Ukkadam areas.
When things go wrong
Lost & found and airline help
Lost something at the airport?
- Coimbatore Airport is run by the Airports Authority of India. Report losses at the airport information desk or to the AAI duty manager.
- Left something on the plane? That’s the airline’s responsibility — go to their counter before you leave the building if you can.
- Missing checked baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airline’s baggage desk in arrivals before exiting. Claims are much harder afterwards.
- Carry a photo of your bag and its tag number; it speeds everything up.
Airline customer service
Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:
- IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 in-app chat)
- Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
- Air India Express — airindiaexpress.com → Support
- Air Arabia — airarabia.com → Contact Us
- SriLankan Airlines and Scoot — via their own official sites or their CJB ticketing counters.
India’s aviation grievance portal, AirSewa, handles complaints that airlines don’t resolve — including baggage, refunds and denied boarding.
Health & emergencies
Hospitals near the airport
At the airport
The terminal has a medical room and ambulance access — ask any airport staff member or CISF officer. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112; ambulances can also be called on 102 or 108.
Major hospitals within ~30 min
- Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) — the region’s best-known private multi-speciality, ~15 min.
- PSG Hospitals — large teaching hospital at Peelamedu, very close to the airport.
- Ganga Hospital — internationally regarded for orthopaedics and trauma, ~20 min.
- Sri Ramakrishna Hospital — major private hospital in the city, ~20 min.
Coimbatore is one of South India’s stronger medical hubs, which is why it draws patients from across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Private hospitals generally expect payment upfront or a direct insurance tie-up.
Diplomatic help
Consular help for foreign visitors
There are no foreign consulates in Coimbatore. Tamil Nadu is covered by the consulates in Chennai — about an hour away by air — with embassies in New Delhi above them.
Where to go
- Chennai — consulates including the United States, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and others, most clustered around Nungambakkam and Cathedral Road.
- New Delhi (Chanakyapuri) — all embassies and high commissions, for anything a consulate can’t handle.
- Most missions handle citizen emergencies by phone first — call before you travel anywhere.
Lost passport in Tamil Nadu
- File a police report locally — you’ll need it for an emergency travel document and for the FRRO.
- Contact the FRRO/FRO for exit formalities; details in our FRRO guide.
- Nearly all consulates require an appointment; consular sections generally work weekday mornings.
Stocking up
Groceries & essentials nearby
Physical stores
- Avinashi Road — supermarkets, pharmacies and mobile shops all along the corridor between the airport and the city.
- Brookefields and Fun Republic malls — full supermarkets and department stores, 15–20 minutes away.
- Gandhipuram and Town Hall — the traditional markets, best for spices, cotton and filter coffee powder to take home.
The Indian shortcut: delivery apps
Quick-commerce apps — Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart — operate across Coimbatore and deliver groceries, toiletries, chargers and medicine to your hotel in 10–30 minutes. They need an Indian address pin and usually work with UPI or an Indian card.
Off-airport dining
Restaurants & bars near the airport
Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & food section above.
Avinashi Road
The strip between Peelamedu and the city has the densest cluster of restaurants near the airport — South Indian, North Indian, Chinese and a growing café scene, plus the food courts at Brookefields and Fun Republic.
Hotel dining & bars
Hotel restaurants along Avinashi Road and at Race Course are the reliable choice for a sit-down meal or a drink. Bars in Tamil Nadu are hotel- and licence-bound; standalone liquor retail is state-run (TASMAC).
Eat Kongu
The regional food is distinct and worth seeking out: Kongu-style biryani, arisi paruppu sadam, banana-leaf meals, and Coimbatore’s serious filter coffee. Annapoorna and the old Gandhipuram tiffin houses are the classic addresses.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How many terminals does Coimbatore Airport have?
One integrated terminal handling both domestic and international flights, with a single concourse — the walk to your gate is short.
Does Coimbatore have international flights?
Yes. Singapore, Sharjah, Colombo and Kuala Lumpur have all operated as direct routes, with carriers including Scoot, Air Arabia, SriLankan Airlines and the Indian airlines. Routes change by schedule season, so confirm before booking.
How far is the airport from the city?
About 10 km, on Avinashi Road at Peelamedu — roughly 20–35 minutes depending on traffic. Coimbatore Junction railway station is about 11 km away.
Is Coimbatore the closest airport to Ooty?
Yes. Ooty is 85–90 km away, about 3–3.5 hours by road via Mettupalayam and 36 hairpin bends. Prepaid taxis at the airport quote fixed fares to Ooty and Coonoor.
How early should I arrive?
Three hours for international, two for domestic. The terminal is small, so this is comfortable outside the early-morning and late-evening banks.
Can I enter India on an e-Visa at Coimbatore?
Yes — Coimbatore is a designated e-Visa airport. Carry your printed ETA approval and use the e-Visa counters at immigration.
Which airline has the most flights from CJB?
IndiGo by a wide margin — Coimbatore is one of its focus cities, which is why so many domestic routes are operated by a single carrier.
Is a new terminal being built?
A new terminal and a large modernisation programme have been announced, with land acquisition as the main constraint. Until it completes, the existing terminal is what you’ll use.
This guide was verified in August 2026 against official airport, airline and government sources. Details change — always reconfirm anything critical (terminals, visas, timings) before you travel.
