Terminal

Good news: there’s only one

Unlike Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, Hyderabad operates a single integrated terminal for both domestic and international flights — no cross-city or cross-campus terminal transfers, no shuttle buses, no risk of showing up at the wrong building. Everything happens under one roof, split into two wings.

LAYOUT

The terminal is divided by direction, not by number: the Western Wing handles international flights, and the Eastern Wing handles domestic flights. There’s also a separate Haj Terminal used exclusively during the annual Hajj pilgrimage season.

Eastern Wing Domestic

Handles flights to virtually every major Indian city. Recently expanded (Nov 2023 and Sept 2024) with 56 remote bus gates and a dedicated domestic-to-domestic transfer area.

IndiGo Air India SpiceJet Akasa Air

New in 2025: a luxury retail zone opened in the domestic Security Hold Area — a sign of how much business travel HYD handles.

Western Wing International

Full immigration, customs and duty-free — connecting Hyderabad to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and beyond. As of late 2025, HYD reached its 100th destination, split across 74 domestic and 26 international cities.

Emirates · Etihad · Qatar Airways AirAsia · Singapore Airlines Air India · IndiGo (international routes)

Popular routes: Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Riyadh are among HYD’s busiest international connections — reflecting Hyderabad’s large Gulf-bound workforce.

Even with one terminal, always confirm your check-in row and gate on your ticket or the airline app — a large single building still means real walking distances between the domestic and international sides.

Flying out

Departures

Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic (the airport’s own guidance suggests 90 minutes domestic / 180 minutes international as a minimum — treat that as a floor, not a target).

Before security

  • Entry: boarding pass/ticket plus photo ID checked at terminal entry.
  • DigiYatra is active at gates 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 — biometric entry that the airport says clears passengers in under 10 minutes.
  • Cityside check-in lets you drop bags and collect boarding passes before entering the main terminal building — a genuine time-saver during peak hours.
  • 87 check-in desks plus self-check-in kiosks keep queues moving even at this airport’s scale.

Good to know

  • Domestic security has 2 checkpoints; international has 3 (entrance, check-in area, and near the gates) — budget extra time on the international side.
  • Fast-track lanes exist at both security and immigration for eligible passengers.
  • HYD is India’s largest airport by land area (5,500 acres) — even within one terminal, allow real walking time to far gates.

Landing here

Arrivals

International arrivals: immigration, baggage reclaim, customs (green channel if nothing to declare), then the arrivals hall. Domestic arrivals go straight to reclaim — 10 baggage belts total (7 domestic, 3 international).

In the arrivals hall

  • SIM cards: telecom counters in international arrivals — bring your passport and a photo.
  • Currency exchange counters operate in the arrivals area.
  • A dedicated transfer desk near baggage belt 2 helps with international-to-domestic connections.

Meeting someone?

  • Greeters wait outside the terminal exits — entry to the building requires a ticket.
  • Both taxi and Uber/Ola pickup points are clearly marked and staff at arrivals can point you to either.

At the border

Immigration & baggage rules

Rules differ by who you are. Here’s the short version — treat it as orientation, not legal advice, and check official Indian government sources for your specific situation.

Indian citizens

  • Immigration applies to international trips only — passport, boarding pass, and destination visa where needed.
  • Fast Track Immigration (FTI-TTP) e-gates and fast-track lanes are available for registered Indian citizens — enrol online in advance.
  • Returning residents get a duty-free allowance (general goods up to a rupee limit, plus limited alcohol and tobacco) — check current CBIC limits before shopping abroad.

OCI holders & PRs abroad

  • OCI card holders use visa-free entry with a valid foreign passport + OCI card; the FTI-TTP fast-track is open to OCI holders too.
  • Indian-origin travellers with foreign PR (e.g. US green card) but no OCI need a visa/e-visa like other foreign nationals.

Foreign nationals

  • e-Visa holders: follow the dedicated e-Visa lanes at immigration — carry the printed ETA approval.
  • Regular visas use the standard foreigner queues; complete the arrival card from the plane or the hall.
  • Customs: green channel if nothing to declare; currency above prescribed limits (foreign cash beyond ~US$5,000, or higher total instruments) must be declared.

Allowances and visa rules change — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Comfort & cash

Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange

Lounges

  • Encalm Lounges — HYD’s main third-party lounge brand, with locations in both the domestic departure area (Level E, near Gate 21) and international departure area (Level E, near Gate 23). Access via Priority Pass, DragonPass and select bank cards, or pay at the door.
  • Three Encalm lounges in total are available to passengers regardless of class — ask at any information desk for directions.
  • Card note: bank lounge programmes changed across India in late 2025 — confirm your card’s current access before relying on it.

ATMs & forex

  • Bank ATMs are available throughout the terminal, landside and airside.
  • Currency exchange counters operate in both the departures and arrivals areas — airport rates carry a premium, so change only what you need.
  • India runs heavily on UPI; a working international card plus a small cash reserve covers most travellers.

Inside the terminal

Shopping, restaurants & restrooms

Shopping

The international side has a full duty-free selection; the domestic side recently added a luxury retail zone in the Security Hold Area for premium brands — a notable upgrade given how much business travel passes through HYD.

Food

HYD is genuinely well regarded for its Hyderabadi cuisine options — don’t skip a proper biryani before your flight, alongside the usual mix of cafés, fast food, and sit-down restaurants both before and after security.

Restrooms & essentials

Restrooms are frequent and well-signed with accessible facilities. The airport also has a nursery room, business centers with printers and computers, free Wi-Fi (2 hours, ask a help desk if you have trouble connecting), and a PRM (reduced mobility) lounge opposite departure gate 9.

Connecting flights

Transfers within the terminal

The good news

Because it’s one integrated building, there’s no inter-terminal shuttle or bus to worry about. For domestic-to-domestic (D-D) and international-to-international (I-I) connections, you generally stay within the terminal, using the dedicated D-D transfer area.

When you still need real time

For international-to-domestic (I-D) or domestic-to-international (D-I) connections, you must still clear immigration and customs, then check in again — keep at least 2.5–3 hours. The transfer desk near baggage belt 2 can help route you correctly.

Getting to & from

Ground transportation

Metro (not yet at the airport)

Hyderabad Metro doesn’t reach the airport yet — the closest operational station, Raidurg, is about 20 km away. The “Airport Metro Express” (Phase 2, Nagole–Shamshabad) is under construction; don’t plan around it until officially confirmed open.

Bus

  • TSRTC Pushpak Airport Liner — comfortable AC electric buses with phone chargers, wheelchair accessible, running non-stop from Secretariat, Masab Tank, and Secunderabad. A genuinely good, affordable option.

Taxi & ride-hailing

  • Prepaid taxi counters and app-based cabs (Uber/Ola) are both available at arrivals — staff can point you to either.
  • Average fare to the city: roughly ₹600–1,000.
  • Journey time to the city centre: about 45 minutes, more in traffic; Hi-Tech City is around 36 km.

Got a long layover?

Attractions near the airport

Under 30 min away

  • Ramoji Film City — one of the world’s largest film studio complexes, also a full tourist attraction, roughly 25–30 min from the airport.
  • Shamshabad’s local sights — a quiet, still-developing area, so options this close are limited beyond Ramoji.

Worth it with 6+ hours

  • Charminar & the Old City — Hyderabad’s icon and its bazaars, roughly 45–60 min away.
  • Golconda Fort — the sprawling historic fortress, similarly ~45–60 min.
  • Hussain Sagar Lake & Necklace Road — the city’s lakeside promenade.

Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit. With no metro yet, budget real road time both ways.

Sacred Hyderabad

Temples, churches, mosques & more

Closest to the airport

  • Local Shamshabad temples — several small neighbourhood temples near the airport for a quick visit.
  • Haj Terminal at the airport itself is a reminder of Hyderabad’s significance for Hajj pilgrims from across South India.

Hyderabad’s icons

  • Mecca Masjid — one of India’s oldest and largest mosques, right by Charminar.
  • Chilkur Balaji Temple — the famous “visa temple,” genuinely popular with travellers seeking blessings before international trips.
  • Birla Mandir — striking white-marble hilltop temple overlooking Hussain Sagar.
  • St. Joseph’s Cathedral — Hyderabad’s principal Catholic cathedral in the old city.

When things go wrong

Lost & found and airline help

Lost something at the airport?

  • Report to the terminal’s Lost & Found desk before leaving if possible, or check the official GMR Hyderabad International Airport website (hyderabad.aero) for the current process.
  • Left something on the plane? That goes to your airline, not the airport — contact the airline directly.
  • Airport information desks can direct you to the nearest help point for lost items.

Airline customer service

Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:

  • Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
  • IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 chat in-app)
  • SpiceJet — spicejet.com → Contact Us
  • Akasa Air — akasaair.com → Support
  • International carriers: use the airline’s own site, or their ticketing counters at the international check-in area.

Health & emergencies

Hospitals near the airport

At the airport

The terminal has on-site medical facilities — ask any airport staff member for the nearest medical room. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112 (ambulance also via 102/108).

Major hospitals within reach

  • Care Hospitals, Shamshabad / Banjara Hills — full-service private hospital network with a location closer to the airport.
  • Yashoda Hospitals, Somajiguda — large multi-speciality hospital, ~40–45 min toward the city.
  • Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills — flagship of India’s biggest private chain, ~45 min.

Diplomatic help

Consulates in Hyderabad

Hyderabad hosts a growing number of consulates (embassies are in Delhi), reflecting its large Gulf-bound and IT-sector expat population — mostly clustered around the Banjara Hills / Jubilee Hills area, roughly 45–60 minutes from the airport.

Major missions

The U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad is one of the busiest American visa posts globally (given the volume of H-1B and student visa applicants), alongside consulates or honorary consulates for several Gulf states and other countries with strong Hyderabad ties.

Before you go

  • Nearly all consulates require an appointment — check the official website; walk-ins are usually only for citizen emergencies.
  • Most consular sections work weekday mornings only.
  • For a lost passport you’ll typically also need a police report (Telangana Police supports online lost-property complaints).

Stocking up

Groceries & essentials nearby

Physical stores

  • Shamshabad town — pharmacies and convenience stores a short drive from the terminal.
  • For a fuller supermarket, expect a 20–30 minute drive toward the city’s outer areas.

The shortcut: delivery apps

Staying at an airport-area hotel? Quick-commerce apps — Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart — deliver groceries, toiletries, chargers, and medicine, though check coverage for the Shamshabad area specifically, since it’s further from central Hyderabad than most delivery zones.

Off-airport dining

Restaurants & bars near the airport

Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & restaurants section above.

Hotel dining & bars

Novotel Hyderabad Airport and other Shamshabad-area hotels welcome non-guests and are the reliable choice for a proper meal or a drink, given how limited independent dining is right around the terminal.

The obvious move: biryani

You’re minutes from the city that arguably does biryani better than anywhere else in India — if your layover allows even a short trip, a proper Hyderabadi biryani restaurant is worth prioritising over anything else on this list.

Worth the drive

Hi-Tech City and Banjara Hills have Hyderabad’s best restaurant and bar scene, but they’re 45+ minutes away — realistic only with a long layover and a car booked both ways.
