Current weather at CCJ
Loading current conditions…
Live conditions via OpenWeatherMap. Kerala’s southwest monsoon (June–September) is intense on the Malabar coast, and heavy rain is the main cause of delays here. The airport sits on a plateau at about 104 m, so conditions can differ from the coast below.
Terminal
One terminal at Karipur
Kozhikode has a single integrated terminal handling domestic and international flights. Locals call it Karipur, after the village where it sits in Malappuram district — 28 km from Kozhikode city, which surprises first-time visitors expecting a city airport.
This is one of India’s great Gulf airports. Kozhikode has historically been level with Hyderabad on international passenger traffic, despite serving a far smaller city — the result of decades of Malabar migration to the Gulf. The schedule, the crowds and the terminal’s rhythm all follow from that.
The Gulf dominates: routes to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, plus Southeast Asian links.
Kozhikode is an operating base for Air India Express, which is why that airline’s presence here is far larger than the city’s size would suggest.
Smaller than the international side, with connections to the metros and other Kerala cities.
Kerala has four international airports — Kozhikode, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur. If CCJ doesn’t have your route, Kannur is ~90 km north and Kochi ~170 km south.
Karipur is a long-standing Hajj embarkation point, with a dedicated Hajj terminal facility used during the pilgrimage season.
During Hajj and in the Umrah peaks the airport gets very busy with large family send-offs. If you’re on an unrelated flight in that window, allow extra time on the approach road and at the kerb.
Route networks and aircraft types at Kozhikode have changed repeatedly over the years. Confirm your flight on the airline’s own app before travelling.
Something people ask about
The tabletop runway
Karipur is one of a small number of Indian airports with a tabletop runway — built on a plateau, with the ground falling away sharply at both ends rather than continuing into flat overrun area. Mangaluru and Lengpui are the other well-known examples. It is a normal certified runway, but it leaves less margin than a conventional one if an aircraft lands long or fast.
The 2020 accident
- On 7 August 2020, Air India Express Flight IX-1344, a repatriation service from Dubai, overran the runway while landing in heavy monsoon rain and fell into the valley beyond, breaking apart.
- 21 people died, including both pilots. Most of those on board survived.
- The investigation examined the landing in wet conditions, the decision to continue the approach, and the airport’s runway safety margins.
What changed since
- Runway safety at tabletop airports drew sustained regulatory scrutiny afterwards, including work on safety areas, drainage and operating limits in heavy rain.
- Aircraft-size restrictions at Karipur have been tightened and relaxed at various points over the years — wide-body operations were suspended for a long period for runway work before returning.
- The airport operates normally today, with a large international schedule.
Should you worry?
- Commercial flying in India remains statistically very safe, and Karipur handles millions of passengers a year without incident.
- What the runway’s geography does mean is that crews are more conservative in heavy monsoon rain — expect holds, go-arounds or diversions to Kochi or Kannur rather than treating them as alarming.
- A diversion is the system working as intended, not a sign something has gone wrong.
This section is included because travellers search for it and deserve a straight answer. For the authoritative account, see the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s published report on the 2020 accident.
Flying out
Departures
Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic. Kozhikode’s international departures carry heavy checked baggage and large family groups, so check-in queues build faster here than the passenger count alone would suggest.
Before security
- Entry: a printed or mobile boarding pass and photo ID are checked at the terminal doors.
- Baggage is the local sport. Gulf-bound passengers routinely travel at the limit — weigh bags at home, because excess charges at the counter are steep.
- Check-in typically closes 60 minutes before international departures, 45 before domestic.
Timing traps
- The 28 km drive from Kozhikode is the variable — the road through Ramanattukara and Kondotty is busy, so allow an hour.
- Monsoon (June–September) brings the highest chance of delays and diversions.
- Hajj and Umrah peaks fill the forecourt with send-off crowds; budget extra time at the kerb.
Landing here
Arrivals
International arrivals clear immigration, then baggage reclaim, then customs before the exit. Domestic arrivals go straight to the belt. Expect the arrivals hall to be busy — Gulf returns draw large welcoming parties.
In the arrivals hall
- Prepaid taxi counter and app-cab pickup are available; the KSRTC also runs services from the airport.
- ATMs and forex counters serve the international sectors.
- Customs pays attention here. Gold and electronics allowances are enforced on Gulf routes — see the immigration section below.
Meeting someone?
- Greeting parties for returning family members can be large; the forecourt gets crowded at peak arrival times.
- Onward to Wayanad, Kannur or Malappuram? Karipur is often closer to those than Kozhikode city is.
- Pre-book a car for a late arrival rather than relying on availability at the kerb.
At the border
Immigration, emigration & customs
With a large share of passengers travelling to and from the Gulf for work, the emigration and customs sides matter here more than at a tourist airport. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice.
Workers heading to the Gulf
- Indian passports are either ECR (Emigration Check Required) or ECNR. ECR holders travelling to certain countries for employment need emigration clearance via the eMigrate system.
- Carry your employment documents, visa and any clearance paperwork.
- Don’t rely on an agent’s assurance that it’s “handled” — verify your own status before you reach the airport.
Customs on return
- Gold is the single most common problem on Kozhikode’s Gulf routes. Allowances are limited, conditional on how long you’ve been abroad, and actively enforced.
- Electronics, cigarettes and alcohol all have defined limits. Declare rather than gamble — penalties and confiscation are routine.
- Foreign cash above roughly US$5,000, or higher totals in instruments, must be declared.
Foreign nationals
- e-Visa holders can enter through Kozhikode — carry the printed ETA approval. See our how to apply guide.
- Long-stay visitors may need FRRO registration — see our FRRO guide.
- Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in cabin baggage only.
Emigration, customs and gold allowance rules change and are strictly applied — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in), eMigrate (emigrate.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Live data provided by a third-party service; for authoritative status use the official AAI Calicut Airport page or your airline’s app — particularly during the monsoon, when diversions to Kochi or Kannur are possible.
Comfort & cash
Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange
Lounges
- A modest lounge offering rather than the spread of a metro airport, with pay-per-use access typically available.
- Access is otherwise via credit-card lounge programmes.
- Card access changed across India in late 2025 — many banks moved to direct partnerships with spend conditions. Confirm your card still qualifies.
ATMs & forex
- ATMs are available landside; airside options are limited, so draw cash before security.
- Forex counters serve the international sectors — rates carry the usual airport premium, and Kozhikode city has plenty of exchanges at better rates.
- Kerala runs heavily on UPI; a card plus small cash covers the rest.
Inside the terminal
Shopping, food & restrooms
Shopping
A duty-free on the international side plus convenience retail. Local buys — Malabar spices, banana chips, halwa — are far better and cheaper in Kozhikode’s SM Street and Mittai Theruvu than at the airport.
Food
Kerala-style counters alongside standard quick service: puttu, appam, biryani and strong coffee. Budget ₹150–400 for something light. Options are limited relative to peak international crowds.
Restrooms & essentials
Clean and well-signed with accessible facilities, prayer facilities and drinking-water points. Wi-Fi usually needs an SMS code, so an Indian mobile number helps.
Extra help
Assistance & accessibility
Wheelchairs & reduced mobility
Free wheelchair assistance is a regulatory requirement at Indian airports. Request it when booking, at least 48 hours ahead, and confirm at check-in. Demand is high here during Hajj and Umrah seasons, so book early.
First-time and elderly travellers
Many of CCJ’s passengers are travelling for work, sometimes for the first time, or are older pilgrims. Airline ground staff will walk someone through check-in, emigration and security if asked — ask at the counter, not at the gate.
Families
Baby-care facilities are available and families with infants are usually called for priority boarding. Plan the 28 km road journey as part of the trip, not an afterthought.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation
The airport is at Karipur in Malappuram district, about 28 km from Kozhikode city. Allow an hour for the drive — the route through Ramanattukara and Kondotty carries steady traffic.
Taxi & ride-hailing
- Prepaid taxi counter in arrivals — fixed fare, paid inside, no negotiation.
- Ola and Uber operate, with availability thinner late at night when many Gulf flights land.
- Hotel pickups are common and worth arranging for an overnight arrival.
Bus & rail
- KSRTC runs bus services connecting the airport with Kozhikode and other towns — cheap and reliable, less convenient with heavy bags.
- Rail: Kozhikode station is the main hub; Feroke and Parappanangadi are closer to the airport for some journeys.
- Kerala’s rail line along the coast makes onward travel to Kannur, Thrissur and Kochi straightforward.
Onward destinations
- Kozhikode city ~28 km · Malappuram ~25 km · Wayanad ~80–100 km · Kannur ~110 km.
- Karipur is often the closest airport for Wayanad and much of interior Malabar.
- Kannur (CNN) and Kochi (COK) are the alternatives if CCJ lacks your route.

Attractions near the airport
Kozhikode city
- Kozhikode Beach — the city’s evening gathering place, with the old pier ruins.
- SM Street (Mittai Theruvu) — “Sweetmeat Street”, the historic market lane and the place to buy halwa and banana chips.
- Kappad Beach — where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498, ~16 km north of the city.
- Beypore — the ancient shipbuilding port where uru dhows are still made by hand.
Worth a full day
- Wayanad — tea and spice country up the ghats, with Edakkal Caves and wildlife sanctuaries.
- Nilambur — the world’s oldest teak plantation, and the Conolly’s Plot heritage grove.
- Thusharagiri Falls and the Western Ghats trails inland from Kozhikode.
Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit. With 28 km each way to the city, allow at least six hours before attempting Kozhikode, and treat Wayanad as an overnight.
Sacred Malabar
Mosques, temples & churches
Close to the airport
- Kondotty Qubba Mosque — a notable shrine near the airport with a distinctive domed architecture and an annual festival.
- Mishkal Mosque, Kuttichira — a 14th-century wooden mosque in Kozhikode, built in Kerala rather than Middle Eastern style and one of the region’s most remarkable buildings.
- Muchundi Mosque — another of the old Kuttichira mosques, with inscriptions dating back centuries.
Temples & churches
- Tali Temple — the 14th-century Shiva temple at the heart of old Kozhikode, built by the Zamorins.
- Thirunelli, Wayanad — an ancient temple in the hills, for those heading inland.
- CSI and Catholic churches in the city reflect Malabar’s long-established Christian community.
Malabar is religiously mixed and generally relaxed, but dress modestly at all places of worship. Some Kerala temples restrict entry to Hindus and require men to remove shirts — check at the entrance rather than assuming.
When things go wrong
Lost & found and airline help
Lost something at the airport?
- Kozhikode Airport is run by the Airports Authority of India. Report losses at the airport information desk or to the AAI duty manager.
- Left something on the plane? That’s the airline’s responsibility — go to their counter before you leave the building.
- Missing checked baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airline’s baggage desk in arrivals before exiting. Claims are much harder afterwards.
- Carry a photo of your bag and its tag number.
Airline customer service
Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:
- Air India Express — airindiaexpress.com → Support
- IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 in-app chat)
- Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
- Gulf carriers — via their own official sites or their CCJ ticketing counters.
India’s aviation grievance portal, AirSewa, handles complaints that airlines don’t resolve — including baggage, refunds and denied boarding.
Health & emergencies
Hospitals near the airport
At the airport
The terminal has a medical room and ambulance access — ask any airport staff member or CISF officer. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112; ambulances can also be called on 102 or 108.
Major hospitals
- Aster MIMS Kozhikode — large private multi-speciality, one of Kerala’s best known.
- Baby Memorial Hospital — major private hospital in the city.
- Kozhikode Government Medical College — the region’s main public tertiary hospital.
- Almas Hospital, Kottakkal and other facilities are closer to the airport than the city ones.
Kerala has among India’s strongest healthcare systems, and Kozhikode is well served. Private hospitals generally expect payment upfront or a direct insurance tie-up.
Off-airport dining
Restaurants near the airport & in the city
Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & food section above.
Near the airport
The Karipur–Kondotty stretch has plenty of local restaurants serving Malabar food at honest prices — considerably better value than the terminal, and open early for pre-dawn departures.
In Kozhikode
Mittai Theruvu (SM Street) and the beach area are the classic eating grounds — halwa shops, tea stalls and old restaurants that have been there for generations.
Eat Malabar
This is one of India’s great food regions: Kozhikode biryani, pathiri, Malabar parotta with beef curry, seafood along the coast, banana chips fried in coconut oil, and the famous Kozhikodan halwa. Note that Kerala restricts alcohol sales to licensed outlets and bars.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How far is Kozhikode Airport from the city?
About 28 km, at Karipur in Malappuram district. Allow an hour by road — longer in traffic through Ramanattukara and Kondotty.
Is Calicut Airport the same as Kozhikode Airport?
Yes. Calicut International Airport, Kozhikode Airport and Karipur Airport are all the same place, code CCJ. Locals usually say Karipur.
Is Kozhikode Airport safe?
It operates normally and handles millions of passengers a year. It does have a tabletop runway, where the ground drops away at both ends, and a fatal overrun accident occurred there in 2020 during heavy monsoon rain. Crews are conservative in bad weather, so holds and diversions in the monsoon are precautionary rather than alarming.
Where does Kozhikode fly internationally?
Mainly the Gulf — Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, Jeddah and others — plus some Southeast Asian routes. Kozhikode has historically been level with Hyderabad on international passenger traffic.
How early should I arrive?
Three hours for international, two for domestic — plus a realistic hour for the drive from Kozhikode.
What are the gold rules coming back from the Gulf?
Allowances are limited and depend on how long you’ve been abroad, and they are actively enforced at Kozhikode. Check current CBIC limits and declare anything near the threshold rather than risking confiscation and penalties.
Which airport is closest to Wayanad?
Kozhikode, at roughly 80–100 km depending on where in Wayanad you’re heading. Kannur is the alternative for the northern side.
Does Kozhikode handle Hajj flights?
Yes — Karipur is a long-standing Hajj embarkation point with a dedicated facility used during the pilgrimage season, when the airport gets considerably busier.
