Live conditions via OpenWeatherMap. Madurai is hot for most of the year and April–June is punishing, often above 38°C — a real consideration when temple visits involve walking barefoot on stone. The northeast monsoon brings the rain from October to December.

Terminal

One terminal, newly international

Madurai has a single integrated terminal at Avaniyapuram, about 12 km south of the city, with separate domestic and international sections inside the same building. The runway was extended to 2,286 m, which is what allows A320s and 737s to operate here.

NEW

Madurai became a full international airport in March 2026. It had operated as a customs airport since 2012, with international flights running under that status. The upgrade is expected to bring more routes — but an announcement is not a schedule. Check that a route actually operates before booking around it.

Domestic The main story

Chennai is by far the busiest route, with Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai also served daily.

IndiGo Air India Air India Express SpiceJet

Traffic surges around Pongal (January), Tamil New Year (April) and the big temple festivals — Chithirai above all. Book weeks ahead for those.

International Small but real

A modest operation serving the Tamil diaspora and Gulf workers, with immigration, customs and duty-free in the terminal.

Colombo Dubai Singapore Abu Dhabi

Routes have come and gone here since the first Dubai service in 2013. Some are seasonal. Verify before you plan a connection around one.

Expansion Coming

Modernisation is under way, with the terminal being expanded toward a target of around 4.5 million passengers a year, and land acquired for further work.

Until that completes, expect a compact terminal that feels tight during festival peaks and when an international departure overlaps the domestic bank.

Route networks at Madurai change with the schedule season and are shifting as the international upgrade beds in. Confirm your flight on the airline’s own app before travelling.

Flying out

Departures

Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic. The terminal is small and the walk to the gate is short, so most of that time is queueing rather than walking — particularly in festival season.

Before security

  • Entry: a printed or mobile boarding pass and photo ID are checked at the terminal doors.
  • Bag drop closes 60 minutes before international departures; domestic check-in typically closes at 45.
  • Domestic and international check-in are separate counters in the same hall — look at the signs, not the crowd.

Timing traps

  • Festival surges — Chithirai, Pongal and Tamil New Year fill flights and the terminal alike.
  • Coming from Rameswaram or Kodaikanal? Those are 3–4 hour drives. Plan around the road.
  • Temple crowds can slow city traffic considerably on festival days — leave earlier than the map says.

Landing here

Arrivals

International arrivals clear immigration, then baggage reclaim, then customs. Domestic arrivals go straight to the belt. You’re in central Madurai in about 25–35 minutes via Alagar Kovil Main Road.

In the arrivals hall

  • Prepaid taxi counter and app-cab pickup are both available.
  • ATMs are available; forex counters serve the international sectors.
  • Doing the pilgrimage circuit? Arrange the car before you land — see the temple circuit section below.

Meeting someone?

  • The forecourt is compact and pickups are quick outside festival days.
  • Roads around the airport have cafés, ATMs and shops — useful if you’re waiting.
  • Hotel pickups are widely offered and worth it for a late arrival.

At the border

Immigration & baggage rules

Madurai handles international arrivals and departures with full immigration and customs. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice.

Foreign nationals

  • Check whether Madurai is currently a designated e-Visa entry point before booking — its status is worth verifying directly given the recent upgrade. See our how to apply guide.
  • Queues at immigration are short compared with a metro, but counters are few, so one full arrival can slow things.
  • Long-stay visitors may need FRRO registration — see our FRRO guide.

Indian citizens & workers abroad

  • ECR passport holders travelling to certain countries for employment need emigration clearance via eMigrate — relevant on the Gulf routes.
  • Gold allowances on return are limited and enforced. Declare rather than gamble.
  • Foreign cash above roughly US$5,000, or higher totals in instruments, must be declared.

Baggage

  • Domestic hand baggage is generally one cabin bag up to 7 kg plus a small personal item.
  • Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in cabin baggage only, never checked.
  • Temple offerings, oils and pastes count as liquids — pack them in checked bags.

Visa, emigration and customs rules change — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in), eMigrate (emigrate.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Comfort & cash

Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange

Lounges

  • Lounge facilities are available for eligible passengers — business class and card programme members.
  • A single modest offering rather than the choice you’d get at a metro airport.
  • Card access changed across India in late 2025 — many banks moved to direct partnerships with spend conditions. Confirm your card still qualifies.

ATMs & forex

  • ATMs are available landside; airside options are limited, so draw cash before security.
  • Forex counters serve the international sectors at the usual airport premium.
  • Carry small cash for the temple. Shoe deposits, camera fees and offerings are cash transactions, and UPI doesn’t reach everything inside a temple complex.

Inside the terminal

Shopping, food & restrooms

Shopping

Duty-free on the international side plus convenience retail. Local buys — Sungudi cotton saris, temple jewellery, Madurai malli (jasmine) — are far better and cheaper around the temple’s market streets.

Food

South Indian counters and quick service: idli, dosa, vada and filter coffee. Budget ₹150–400 for something light. Options are limited when an international and a domestic departure overlap.

Restrooms & essentials

Clean and well-signed with accessible facilities and drinking-water points. Wi-Fi typically needs an SMS code, so an Indian mobile number helps.

Extra help

Assistance & accessibility

Wheelchairs & reduced mobility

Free wheelchair assistance is a regulatory requirement at Indian airports. Request it when booking, at least 48 hours ahead, and confirm at check-in. Note that the temple itself involves considerable walking on uneven stone, barefoot.

Elderly pilgrims

A large share of arrivals are older devotees. Airline ground staff will assist through check-in and security if asked at the counter, and most Madurai hotels can arrange temple transport with a driver who knows the closest gate.

Families

Baby-care facilities are available and families with infants are usually called for priority boarding. In the hot months, plan temple visits for early morning or evening with children.

Getting to & from

Ground transportation

The airport is at Avaniyapuram, about 12 km south of the city centre. The drive into Madurai takes 25–35 minutes via Alagar Kovil Main Road and the airport approach.

Taxi & ride-hailing

  • Prepaid taxi counter in arrivals — fixed fares, no negotiation.
  • Ola, Uber and Rapido all operate with reasonable availability.
  • Autos are available and cheap for the city, though a cab is easier with luggage.

Bus & rail

  • City buses run on the airport road toward Madurai’s central bus stands.
  • Madurai Junction is a major railhead with connections across Tamil Nadu and to Chennai, Bengaluru and beyond.
  • The Mattuthavani bus terminus handles long-distance coaches, including to Kerala.

Onward destinations

  • Rameswaram ~170 km, ~3.5 hrs · Kanyakumari ~240 km, ~5 hrs.
  • Kodaikanal ~120 km, ~3.5 hrs up the ghat · Thekkady ~140 km.
  • Munnar ~160 km, ~4.5 hrs — Madurai is often the most practical fly-in point for these Kerala hill stations.

Why most people come

Meenakshi Amman & the pilgrimage circuit

Madurai exists around its temple. Meenakshi Amman draws millions of pilgrims a year, and IXM is the fly-in point for the classic southern circuit that runs from here to Rameswaram and Kanyakumari.

Meenakshi Amman Temple

  • About 12 km from the airport, in the heart of the old city — the streets are laid out in concentric squares around it.
  • Phones and cameras are restricted inside; there are deposit counters at the entrances.
  • Dress modestly and expect to walk barefoot on stone that gets genuinely hot by midday. Go early morning or evening.
  • The Chithirai festival (April–May) is extraordinary and fills the entire city — book flights and rooms far ahead.

The standard circuit

  • Day 1 — Madurai: Meenakshi darshan, overnight in the city.
  • Day 2 — Rameswaram, ~170 km and 3.5 hours: Ramanathaswamy Temple and the Pamban crossing, overnight there.
  • Day 3 — Kanyakumari, ~300 km from Rameswaram: the meeting of three seas, overnight.
  • Day 4 — back to IXM. Three nights is the usual allocation.

Practical notes

  • Hire a car for the circuit rather than piecing it together — the distances are long and public transport eats the schedule.
  • Rameswaram is an island reached by the Pamban bridge; the new rail bridge has changed the crossing.
  • Other nearby temples worth the detour: Thiruparankundram, Alagar Kovil and Azhagar Koyil.

Got a long layover?

Attractions near the airport

In the city

  • Meenakshi Amman Temple — the reason Madurai exists, ~12 km.
  • Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal — a 17th-century palace with a vast colonnaded courtyard.
  • Gandhi Memorial Museum — housed in a Nayak palace, and one of the better museums in the south.
  • Puthu Mandapam — the pillared market hall beside the temple, good for tailoring and crafts.

Worth a full day

  • Thiruparankundram — a rock-cut Murugan temple, one of his six abodes, ~8 km.
  • Alagar Kovil — hillside Vishnu temple ~21 km, central to the Chithirai festival.
  • Kodaikanal — the hill station, ~120 km and 3.5 hours up the ghat road.
  • Rameswaram — the island temple town, ~170 km.

Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit. With the temple only 12 km away, Meenakshi is realistic on a four-hour gap outside festival days.

When things go wrong

Lost & found and airline help

Lost something at the airport?

  • Madurai Airport is run by the Airports Authority of India. Report losses at the airport information desk or to the AAI duty manager.
  • Left something on the plane? That’s the airline’s responsibility — go to their counter before you leave the building.
  • Missing checked baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airline’s baggage desk in arrivals before exiting.
  • Carry a photo of your bag and its tag number.

Airline customer service

Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:

  • IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 in-app chat)
  • Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
  • Air India Express — airindiaexpress.com → Support
  • SpiceJet — spicejet.com → Contact Us
  • SriLankan Airlines — srilankan.com → Contact Us

India’s aviation grievance portal, AirSewa, handles complaints that airlines don’t resolve — including baggage, refunds and denied boarding.

Health & emergencies

Hospitals near the airport

At the airport

The terminal has a medical room and ambulance access — ask any airport staff member or CISF officer. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112; ambulances can also be called on 102 or 108.

Major hospitals

  • Meenakshi Mission Hospital — one of the region’s best-known private multi-specialities.
  • Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai — private tertiary care.
  • Government Rajaji Hospital — the main public teaching hospital.
  • Madurai is a regional medical hub drawing patients from across southern Tamil Nadu.

Heat exhaustion is a genuine risk for visitors doing temple circuits in April–June. Drink more than you think you need, and avoid the midday hours. Private hospitals generally expect payment upfront or a direct insurance tie-up.

Off-airport dining

Restaurants near the airport & in the city

Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & food section above.

Near the airport

The roads around the terminal have cafés and local restaurants, and the Bypass Road hotels a little further in are the nearest proper sit-down option.

In the old city

Madurai is a famously late-night eating city. The streets around the temple and West Masi Street come alive after dark, and the food stalls near Meenakshi run well past midnight.

Eat Madurai

This is one of Tamil Nadu’s great food cities: jigarthanda (the local cold drink, and non-negotiable), kari dosa, paruthi paal, mutton chukka, and banana-leaf meals. Konar Kadai and the Simmakkal stalls are the classic addresses.
