Live conditions via OpenWeatherMap. Coastal Karnataka gets a ferocious southwest monsoon from June to September — among the heaviest rainfall in India. That’s the main cause of delays here, and it matters more than usual because of the runway’s geography.

Terminal

One terminal, on a hilltop

Mangaluru has a single integrated terminal at Bajpe, roughly 13 km northeast of the city and set on a plateau above it. Domestic and international operations share the building, with separate processing areas inside.

NOTE

This is not an AAI airport. Mangaluru has been operated by Adani Airports since 2020, so lost property, feedback and airport services go through the operator rather than the Airports Authority of India. Your airline still handles anything to do with your flight or your bags.

International The main story

Like Kozhikode and Trichy, Mangaluru’s international traffic reflects decades of Gulf work migration from coastal Karnataka.

Dubai Abu Dhabi Muscat Doha Kuwait Bahrain

Gulf departures cluster in the late evening and small hours — the terminal is busiest then, and quiet mid-afternoon.

Domestic Domestic

Bengaluru and Mumbai are the heaviest routes, with Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune also served.

IndiGo Air India Express Air India Akasa Air

Air India Express has a significant presence here, which is why so many of the Gulf and domestic services carry its code.

Its catchment Context

IXE serves far more than the city: Udupi, Manipal, Karkala, Kasaragod in northern Kerala, and the coastal strip up toward Karwar.

It’s also a practical gateway to Coorg (Madikeri) and Chikmagalur, though the ghat drives are long — see the transport section.

Route networks at Mangaluru change with the schedule season, particularly on the Gulf sectors. Confirm your flight on the airline’s own app before travelling.

Something people ask about

The tabletop runway

Mangaluru sits on a plateau, and its runway is a tabletop — the ground falls away sharply at the ends rather than continuing into flat overrun area. Kozhikode and Lengpui are the other well-known Indian examples. It is a normal certified runway, but it leaves less margin than a conventional one if an aircraft lands long or fast.

The 2010 accident

  • On 22 May 2010, Air India Express Flight IX-812 from Dubai overran the runway on landing and fell into the gorge beyond.
  • 158 of the 166 people on board died. It remains one of India’s worst aviation disasters.
  • The investigation focused on the approach being continued from an unstabilised position and the decision-making in the final minutes.

What changed since

  • The accident, and the 2020 overrun at Kozhikode, drove sustained regulatory attention to runway end safety areas, approach procedures and wet-runway operating limits at tabletop airports.
  • Safety area improvements and monsoon operating restrictions have followed at airports of this type.
  • Mangaluru operates normally today, with a full domestic and Gulf schedule.

Should you worry?

  • Commercial flying in India remains statistically very safe, and IXE handles millions of passengers a year without incident.
  • What the geography means in practice is that crews are conservative in heavy rain — expect holds, go-arounds or diversions to Bengaluru or Kochi during the monsoon.
  • A go-around is the system working as designed, not a sign something has gone wrong.

This section is included because travellers search for it and deserve a straight answer. For the authoritative account, see the Court of Inquiry report into the 2010 accident.

Flying out

Departures

Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic. Gulf departures here carry heavy checked baggage and large family send-offs, so check-in queues build faster than the passenger count suggests.

Before security

  • Entry: a printed or mobile boarding pass and photo ID are checked at the terminal doors.
  • Weigh your bags at home. Excess charges at the counter are steep, and Gulf-bound passengers routinely travel at the limit.
  • Check-in typically closes 60 minutes before international departures, 45 before domestic.

Timing traps

  • The monsoon (June–September) is the main disruption risk — heavy rain, holds and occasional diversions.
  • The night wave of Gulf departures is when queues are longest.
  • Coming from Udupi (~60 km) or Coorg (~135 km)? The drive, not the terminal, is your risk.

Landing here

Arrivals

International arrivals clear immigration, then baggage reclaim, then customs. Domestic arrivals go straight to the belt. You’re in Mangaluru city in about 30–40 minutes.

In the arrivals hall

  • Prepaid taxi counter and app-cab pickup are both available.
  • ATMs are available; forex counters serve the international sectors.
  • Customs pays attention here. Gold allowances on Gulf routes are limited and enforced — see the immigration section.

Meeting someone?

  • Gulf arrivals draw large welcoming parties, so the forecourt gets crowded at peak times.
  • Arriving at 3 AM? Most Gulf flights land overnight — arrange a pickup rather than hoping for a cab.
  • Heading to Udupi, Manipal or Kasaragod? Those are all easier from here than from any other airport.

At the border

Immigration, emigration & customs

With a large share of passengers travelling to and from the Gulf for work, the emigration and customs sides matter here more than at a tourist airport. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice.

Workers heading to the Gulf

  • Indian passports are either ECR (Emigration Check Required) or ECNR. ECR holders travelling to certain countries for employment need emigration clearance via the eMigrate system.
  • Carry your employment documents, visa and any clearance paperwork.
  • Verify your own status rather than relying on an agent’s assurance.

Customs on return

  • Gold is the most common problem on these routes. Allowances are limited, depend on how long you’ve been abroad, and are actively enforced.
  • Electronics, cigarettes and alcohol all have defined limits. Declare rather than gamble.
  • Foreign cash above roughly US$5,000, or higher totals in instruments, must be declared.

Foreign nationals

  • e-Visa holders can enter through Mangaluru — carry the printed ETA approval. See our how to apply guide.
  • Long-stay visitors — including students at Manipal, a major draw for international students — may need FRRO registration. See our FRRO guide.
  • Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in cabin baggage only.

Emigration, customs and gold allowance rules change and are strictly applied — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in), eMigrate (emigrate.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Live departures & arrivals

Use the Departures / Arrivals toggle inside the board below to switch between them.

Live data provided by a third-party service. For authoritative status use your airline’s app or the airport operator’s official channels — and note that a quiet board mid-afternoon is normal here.

Comfort & cash

Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange

Lounges

  • Lounge facilities are available, typically via credit-card programmes or pay-per-use — genuinely useful on a 2 AM Gulf departure.
  • A single offering rather than the choice you’d get at a metro airport.
  • Card access changed across India in late 2025 — many banks moved to direct partnerships with spend conditions. Confirm your card still qualifies.

ATMs & forex

  • ATMs are available landside; airside options are limited, so draw cash before security.
  • Forex counters serve the international sectors at the usual airport premium — Mangaluru city has better rates.
  • Coastal Karnataka runs heavily on UPI; a card plus small cash covers the rest.

Inside the terminal

Shopping, food & restrooms

Shopping

Duty-free on the international side plus convenience retail. Local buys — cashews, coffee from the Western Ghats, Udupi handicrafts — are much better sourced in the city.

Food

Cafés and quick-service counters with coastal Karnataka options alongside standard fare — expect neer dosa, buns and filter coffee among the usual. Budget ₹150–400 for something light.

Restrooms & essentials

Clean and well-signed with accessible facilities, prayer facilities and drinking-water points. Wi-Fi typically needs an SMS code, so an Indian mobile number helps.

Extra help

Assistance & accessibility

Wheelchairs & reduced mobility

Free wheelchair assistance is a regulatory requirement at Indian airports. Request it when booking, at least 48 hours ahead, and confirm at check-in.

First-time flyers

Many of IXE’s international passengers travel for work, sometimes for the first time. Airline ground staff will walk someone through check-in, emigration and security if asked — ask at the counter, not at the gate.

Students & medical visitors

Manipal brings a steady flow of students and their families through this airport, and Mangaluru’s hospitals draw patients from across the region. Both mean the airport is used to first-time and anxious travellers.

Getting to & from

Ground transportation

The airport is at Bajpe, about 13 km northeast of Mangaluru, up on the plateau. Allow 30–40 minutes into the city — the road winds down off the hill.

Taxi & ride-hailing

  • Prepaid taxi counter in arrivals — fixed fares, no negotiation.
  • Ola, Uber and Rapido operate, though availability thins in the small hours when Gulf flights land.
  • Hotel pickups are widely offered and worth it for an overnight arrival.

Bus & rail

  • KSRTC and private buses connect the airport and Mangaluru with the coastal corridor.
  • Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction are the rail hubs, with the Konkan Railway running north to Goa and Mumbai — one of India’s great train journeys.
  • The coastal rail line makes Udupi, Karwar and Kasaragod straightforward without a car.

Onward destinations

  • Udupi ~60 km, ~1.5 hrs · Manipal ~65 km · Kasaragod ~50 km south, in Kerala.
  • Madikeri (Coorg) ~135 km, ~4 hrs up the ghats · Chikmagalur ~160 km.
  • Dharmasthala ~75 km · Kukke Subramanya ~105 km — both major pilgrimage destinations.

Attractions near the airport

In and near the city

  • Panambur Beach — the main city beach, with the port alongside it.
  • Tannirbhavi and Someshwara beaches — quieter stretches of the coast.
  • St Aloysius Chapel — its interior is covered floor to ceiling in frescoes, and genuinely unexpected.
  • Sultan Battery — a 18th-century watchtower on the Gurupura river.

Worth a full day

  • Udupi — the Krishna Temple and the birthplace of the cuisine that took its name worldwide, ~60 km.
  • St Mary’s Islands — hexagonal basalt columns off Malpe, reached by boat.
  • Coorg (Madikeri) — coffee country up the ghats, ~4 hours, an overnight rather than a day trip.
  • Kudremukh and the Western Ghats — trekking and rainforest inland.

Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit. Mangaluru city works on a four- or five-hour gap; Udupi needs most of a day.

Sacred Tulu Nadu

Temples, churches & mosques

Major pilgrimage sites

  • Dharmasthala — the Manjunatha temple, administered by a Jain family and open to all faiths, with free meals for every visitor, ~75 km.
  • Kukke Subramanya — a major Subramanya temple at the foot of the Ghats, ~105 km.
  • Udupi Sri Krishna Matha — the 13th-century Madhva centre where the deity is viewed through a carved window, ~60 km.
  • Kadri Manjunath Temple — ancient temple in Mangaluru itself with remarkable bronze figures.

A mixed coast

  • Coastal Karnataka has long-established Christian and Muslim communities. The Mangalorean Catholic community is centuries old, and St Aloysius and Milagres are among its landmark churches.
  • Zeenath Baksh Jumma Masjid is one of the oldest mosques in India, in the old city.
  • Bhuta Kola — the region’s distinctive spirit-worship ritual performances — are part of Tulu Nadu’s living tradition, not a tourist show.

When things go wrong

Lost & found and airline help

Lost something at the airport?

  • Mangaluru Airport is operated by Adani Airports, not AAI. Report losses at the airport information desk or to the duty manager on shift.
  • Left something on the plane? That’s the airline’s responsibility — go to their counter before you leave the building.
  • Missing checked baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airline’s baggage desk in arrivals before exiting. Claims are much harder afterwards.
  • Carry a photo of your bag and its tag number.

Airline customer service

Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:

  • Air India Express — airindiaexpress.com → Support
  • IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 in-app chat)
  • Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
  • Akasa Air — akasaair.com → Support
  • Gulf carriers — via their own official sites or their IXE ticketing counters.

India’s aviation grievance portal, AirSewa, handles complaints that airlines don’t resolve — including baggage, refunds and denied boarding.

Health & emergencies

Hospitals near the airport

At the airport

The terminal has a medical room and ambulance access — ask any airport staff member or CISF officer. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112; ambulances can also be called on 102 or 108.

Major hospitals

  • Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Manipal — one of India’s leading teaching hospitals, ~65 km.
  • Father Muller Medical College Hospital — major hospital in Mangaluru city.
  • KMC Hospital, Mangaluru and A.J. Hospital — private multi-specialities in the city.
  • Mangaluru and Manipal together form one of India’s strongest medical clusters, drawing patients from across Karnataka and northern Kerala.

Private hospitals generally expect payment upfront or a direct insurance tie-up. Travel insurance with cashless coverage in India is worth arranging before you fly.

Off-airport dining

Restaurants near the airport & in the city

Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & food section above.

Near the airport

Bajpe has local restaurants and small eateries rather than anything notable. The city, 30–40 minutes down the hill, is where the food is.

In the city

MG Road, Balmatta and Hampankatta hold most of Mangaluru’s restaurants, plus the beach shacks at Panambur and Tannirbhavi for an evening.

Eat Mangalorean

One of India’s genuinely distinctive cuisines: neer dosa, kori rotti, fish curry with kokum, ghee roast, pundi and the Mangalorean Catholic dishes like sorpotel. Coastal seafood here is exceptional and cheap.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

How far is Mangaluru Airport from the city?

About 13 km northeast, at Bajpe on a plateau above the city. Allow 30–40 minutes — the road winds down off the hill.

Who operates Mangaluru Airport?

Adani Airports, since 2020 — it is not an AAI airport. Airport services and lost property go through the operator; your airline still handles flights and baggage.

Is Mangaluru Airport safe?

It operates normally and handles millions of passengers a year. It does have a tabletop runway, where the ground falls away at the ends, and a fatal overrun accident occurred there in 2010. Crews are conservative in heavy rain, so monsoon holds and go-arounds are precautionary rather than alarming.

Where does Mangaluru fly internationally?

Mainly the Gulf — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha, Kuwait and Bahrain among them, largely reflecting coastal Karnataka’s long-standing work migration. Schedules change by season.

How early should I arrive?

Three hours for international, two for domestic. The Gulf night wave is when queues are longest.

Which airport is best for Udupi and Manipal?

Mangaluru, at roughly 60–65 km and about 1.5 hours. Nothing else is close.

Can I get to Coorg from Mangaluru Airport?

Yes, but it’s ~135 km and around four hours up the ghat roads. Treat it as an overnight, not a day trip, and avoid the drive after dark.

What are the gold rules coming back from the Gulf?

Allowances are limited, depend on how long you’ve been abroad, and are actively enforced at this airport. Check current CBIC limits and declare anything near the threshold.
