Current weather at PAT
Loading current conditions…
Live conditions via OpenWeatherMap — useful for packing and planning. Patna sits in the Gangetic plain: dense winter fog (December–January) is the single biggest cause of delays here, and the monsoon runs roughly June to September.
Terminal
One terminal — and it’s brand new
Patna has a single passenger terminal, so there is no wrong building to arrive at. The new terminal was inaugurated in May 2025 and opened to passengers in June 2025, replacing a famously cramped 1970s building. It is two storeys — arrivals on the ground floor, departures on the first — with five aerobridges, 13 boarding gates and around 64 check-in counters.
Patna is a domestic airport in practice. Scheduled international services stopped in 1999 and have not returned, despite the “international” in the airport’s name. If you’re flying in from abroad you will connect through Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or Bengaluru.
Built to handle 3,000 passengers at peak hour and roughly 10 million a year — several times the traffic the airport handles today, so it feels spacious outside the morning bank.
Digi Yatra has been live here since July 2024 — register in the app and you can walk through entry and boarding on face recognition instead of document checks.
Roughly 40 flights a day. The heavy routes are Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Ahmedabad, with seasonal and regional additions.
Book early for Chhath Puja (October–November) and Diwali. Bihar’s festival return traffic is among the most extreme in India, and Patna fares can multiply several times over.
A second civil enclave is being built at Bihta, about 30 km west of the city, with a planned capacity of 5 million passengers a year. Foundation stone was laid alongside the new terminal opening.
Bihta is not open to passengers yet — if a booking site or taxi driver mentions it, your flight is still departing from the main Patna airport.
Airline rosters at Patna change with each schedule season. Confirm your carrier and timing on the airline’s own app before travelling — the AAI schedule page states that its published timings are tentative.
Flying out
Departures
Arrive 2 hours before a domestic departure. That is comfortable at Patna outside the morning rush — but the 6–10 AM bank pushes almost the whole day’s Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru traffic through security at once, so give yourself a real buffer on an early flight. Check-in counters usually close 45 minutes before departure.
Before security
- Entry: a printed or mobile boarding pass and photo ID are checked at the terminal doors, as at every Indian airport.
- Digi Yatra: live since 2024 — the face-recognition lane is the fastest way through entry and boarding.
- Departures are on the first floor — the drop-off ramp takes vehicles straight up, so don’t get out at the ground-floor arrivals kerb by mistake.
Gates & timing
- 13 boarding gates and five aerobridges — most flights now board by bridge rather than by bus.
- The terminal is compact by big-metro standards: security to the furthest gate is a few minutes’ walk.
- Winter fog is the local hazard. December and January mornings can see long holds or diversions — check status before leaving for the airport.
Landing here
Arrivals
Arrivals are on the ground floor: straight off the aerobridge to baggage reclaim and out. There is no immigration or customs here, because there are no scheduled international flights — if you flew in from abroad you cleared both at your Indian entry point.
In the arrivals hall
- Prepaid taxi and app-cab pickup zones are signposted straight ahead as you exit.
- ATMs, a small food counter and the UDAN Yatri Cafe (added in 2026) cover basic needs.
- Onward to the Buddhist circuit? Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, Rajgir and Vaishali are all day-trip or transfer distance — arrange the car before you land rather than negotiating at the kerb.
Meeting someone?
- Greeters wait outside the terminal doors — visitors can’t go inside without a ticket.
- Parking is generous by Patna standards: the new terminal has room for around 1,100 cars.
- The airport sits inside the city, so pickups are quick — but Patna traffic around Sheikhpura and Bailey Road can still add 20 minutes.
Paperwork
Documents & baggage rules
There’s no border control at Patna, but domestic ID and baggage rules still catch people out. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice.
Indian citizens
- Carry a government photo ID matching the name on your ticket — Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter card.
- Domestic hand baggage is generally one cabin bag up to 7 kg plus a small personal item; check-in allowance depends on your fare.
- Power banks and spare lithium batteries must go in cabin baggage only, never in checked bags.
Foreign nationals
- You’ll have entered India elsewhere. Carry your passport and visa/e-visa as your photo ID for the domestic sector.
- If you’re staying long-term in Bihar, see our FRRO registration guide — the regional office is in Patna.
- No restricted-area permit is needed for Bihar. For the north-eastern states and some border districts, see restricted areas.
Common gotchas
- Sweets and pickles: Bihar travellers often carry food home. Liquids and gels over 100 ml can’t go through cabin security — pack them in checked bags.
- Sharp objects, including the small knives sometimes sold at markets, must be checked in.
- Arrive with a printed copy of your ticket if your phone battery is unreliable — entry checks need something readable.
Baggage and security rules are set by BCAS and your airline and do change — check your airline’s baggage page before you pack.

Comfort & cash
Lounges, ATMs & money
Lounges
- The new terminal has a domestic departures lounge airside — a single facility, not the multi-lounge spread of a metro airport.
- Access is typically via credit-card lounge programmes or pay-per-use at the door.
- Card access changed across India in late 2025 — many banks moved to direct lounge partnerships with spend conditions. Confirm your card still qualifies before counting on it.
ATMs & money
- ATMs are available landside; airside options are limited, so draw cash before security if you need it.
- There is no meaningful forex counter here — Patna is a domestic airport. Exchange currency in Delhi or Kolkata, or use an ATM.
- Bihar runs on UPI. Autos, small shops and even roadside stalls take QR payments; keep a few hundred rupees in cash for the rest.
Inside the terminal
Shopping, food & restrooms
Shopping
Modest and practical: convenience retail, books and magazines, and a few outlets carrying Bihar handicrafts and Madhubani painting souvenirs. There is no duty-free — this is a domestic terminal.
Food
Cafés and quick-service counters airside, plus a low-cost UDAN Yatri Cafe added in 2026 selling tea, water and snacks at controlled prices — a genuinely useful thing at Indian airports, where a bottle of water can otherwise cost five times the street price. Budget ₹150–400 for a light meal.
Restrooms & essentials
New, clean and well-signed throughout, with accessible facilities, baby-care rooms and drinking-water points. Wi-Fi was upgraded in early 2026; connection usually needs an SMS code, so an Indian mobile number helps.
Extra help
Assistance & accessibility
Wheelchairs & reduced mobility
Free wheelchair assistance is a regulatory requirement at Indian airports. Request it when booking, at least 48 hours ahead, and confirm at the check-in counter. Aerobridges mean most passengers now board without stairs.
Elderly & first-time flyers
Patna sees a lot of first-time and elderly passengers travelling to see family. Airline ground staff will walk someone through check-in and security if asked — flag it at the counter rather than at the gate, when there’s still time.
Families
Baby-care rooms are available in the new terminal, and families with infants are usually called for priority boarding. Strollers can be gate-checked and collected at the aerobridge on arrival.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation
Patna’s airport is unusually central — roughly 5–6 km from Patna Junction railway station and inside the city rather than out on a bypass. Most journeys take 15–30 minutes.
Taxi & ride-hailing
- Ola and Uber both operate; pick-up zones are signposted from arrivals.
- Prepaid taxi counters inside arrivals are the fuss-free option — fixed fare, paid indoors, no negotiation.
- Avoid drivers who approach you inside the hall offering a “better rate”; walk to the marked counter or app zone.
Auto-rickshaw & bus
- Autos wait outside the gate and are cheap for short hops — agree the fare first, or use an app-booked auto.
- City buses run along the main roads near the airport rather than into the forecourt.
- Long-distance coaches to Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Ranchi and beyond leave from Patliputra ISBT on the eastern bypass.
Metro & rail
- Patna Metro does not reach the airport yet. The first short stretch of the Blue Line opened in October 2025 on the eastern side of the city; an airport spur is only at study stage.
- Patna Junction is the practical rail link — 15 minutes by cab, with trains across Bihar and to Delhi and Kolkata.
- Onward by road: Bodh Gaya ~110 km (2.5–3 hrs), Nalanda ~90 km, Rajgir ~100 km, Vaishali ~55 km.

Hotels near Patna Airport
There is no dedicated airport hotel district here — but because the airport is inside the city, the main hotel cluster around Bailey Road, Fraser Road and Gandhi Maidan is only 10–20 minutes away.

Got a long layover?
Attractions near the airport
Under 30 min away
- Bihar Museum — a genuinely world-class modern museum; the Didarganj Yakshi alone justifies the stop. ~10 min.
- Golghar — the 1786 beehive-shaped granary above Gandhi Maidan, with river views from the top. ~15 min.
- Patna Museum — the older collection, strong on Mauryan and Buddhist sculpture. ~15 min.
- Gandhi Maidan & Marine Drive — the city’s open heart, and the newer riverfront promenade along the Ganges.
Worth it with a full day
- Nalanda — the UNESCO-listed ruins of the ancient university, ~90 km.
- Rajgir — hot springs, the Vishwa Shanti Stupa and a ropeway, ~100 km.
- Vaishali — Ashokan pillar and one of the world’s earliest republics, ~55 km.
- Bodh Gaya — the Mahabodhi Temple where the Buddha attained enlightenment, ~110 km. Gaya has its own airport with seasonal Buddhist-circuit flights.
Bihar road journeys take longer than the distance suggests. For anything past Nalanda, hire a car for the day rather than trying to squeeze it between flights.
Sacred Patna
Temples, gurudwaras, mosques & churches
In the city
- Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib, Patna Sahib — one of the five takhts of Sikhism and the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh. The single most significant religious site in Patna, ~30–40 min east.
- Mahavir Mandir — beside Patna Junction, one of India’s busiest Hanuman temples; famous for its naivedyam laddus.
- Padri Ki Haveli (St Mary’s Church) — Bihar’s oldest church, built in 1772.
- Patthar Ki Masjid — early 17th-century Mughal mosque on the riverbank.
Pilgrim routes from here
- Buddhist circuit: Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, Rajgir, Vaishali and on to Kushinagar and Sarnath — Patna is the usual arrival point for the whole loop.
- Jain pilgrims travel from Patna to Pawapuri, where Mahavira attained nirvana, ~90 km.
- Chhath Puja (October–November) turns the Ganges ghats into one of India’s great mass rituals — extraordinary to witness, and the reason flights sell out.
When things go wrong
Lost & found and airline help
Lost something at the airport?
- Patna Airport is run by the Airports Authority of India. Report losses at the airport information desk in the terminal, or to the AAI duty manager.
- Left something on the plane? That’s the airline’s responsibility, not the airport’s — go to your airline’s counter before you leave the building if you can.
- Missing checked baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airline’s baggage desk in the arrivals hall before exiting. Claims are much harder afterwards.
- Carry a photo of your bag and its tag number; it speeds everything up.
Airline customer service
Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:
- IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 in-app chat)
- Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
- Air India Express — airindiaexpress.com → Support
- SpiceJet — spicejet.com → Contact Us
- Akasa Air — akasaair.com → Support
India’s aviation grievance portal, AirSewa, handles complaints that airlines don’t resolve — including baggage, refunds and denied boarding.
Health & emergencies
Hospitals near the airport
At the airport
The terminal has a medical room and ambulance access — ask any airport staff member or CISF officer. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112; ambulances can also be called on 102 or 108.
Major hospitals within ~30 min
- AIIMS Patna — the region’s leading public tertiary hospital, ~25–30 min south.
- IGIMS — large government super-speciality institute, ~20 min.
- Paras HMRI Hospital — major private multi-speciality, ~15 min.
- Ruban Memorial Hospital — private, central, ~15 min.
- PMCH — historic government medical college hospital on Ashok Rajpath, ~25 min.
Private hospitals generally expect payment upfront or a direct insurance tie-up. Travel insurance with cashless coverage in India is worth arranging before you fly.
Diplomatic help
Consular help for foreign visitors
There are no foreign embassies or consulates in Patna. Bihar falls under the missions in New Delhi, and for several countries under the consulates in Kolkata — about 1.5 hours away by air.
Where to go
- New Delhi (Chanakyapuri) — all embassies and high commissions, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Roughly 1 hr 40 min by air from Patna.
- Kolkata — consulates including the United States, Germany, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and others; several handle eastern-India jurisdictions.
- Most missions handle citizen emergencies by phone first — call before you fly anywhere.
Lost passport in Bihar
- File a police report locally — you’ll need it for an emergency travel document.
- Contact your embassy’s consular section in Delhi; nearly all require an appointment.
- Long-stay visitors should also see the FRRO office in Patna for registration and visa matters — details in our FRRO guide.
Stocking up
Groceries & essentials nearby
Physical stores
- Bailey Road — the nearest commercial strip to the airport, with supermarkets, pharmacies and mobile shops.
- Boring Road and Fraser Road — larger stores, bookshops and everyday retail, 10–20 minutes away.
- Pharmacies are plentiful and many stay open late; most common medicines are available without the brand names you may know from home.
The Indian shortcut: delivery apps
Quick-commerce apps — Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart — all operate in Patna and deliver groceries, toiletries, chargers and medicines to your hotel in 10–30 minutes. They need an Indian address pin and usually work with UPI or an Indian card. Almost always easier than going out.
Off-airport dining
Restaurants near the airport
Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & food section above.
Bihar is a dry state. The sale and consumption of alcohol has been prohibited since 2016 — there are no bars, and hotels do not serve alcohol. Don’t carry it in from another state either; possession is an offence.
Close to the airport
The Bailey Road corridor a few minutes away has the densest cluster of restaurants and cafés near the terminal — North Indian, Chinese, and a growing number of cafés. Hotel restaurants along the same road are reliable for a sit-down meal.
Worth the trip
The restaurants at Hotel Maurya and Hotel Chanakya near Gandhi Maidan are the traditional choice for a proper meal, and the Exhibition Road area has newer cafés and multi-cuisine restaurants.
Eat local
Try litti chokha (roasted wheat balls with mashed vegetables), sattu drinks and parathas, khaja from Silao, and the laddus at Mahavir Mandir. Street food around Maurya Lok and Boring Road is where locals actually eat.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How many terminals does Patna Airport have?
One. The new terminal opened to passengers in June 2025 — arrivals on the ground floor, departures on the first floor.
Does Patna Airport have international flights?
Not on a scheduled basis. Despite the “international” in its official name, regular international services ended in 1999 and have not resumed. Fly into Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or Bengaluru and connect.
How far is the airport from the city?
Around 5–6 km from Patna Junction railway station — one of the more centrally located airports in India. Expect 15–30 minutes by cab depending on traffic.
Is there a metro to Patna Airport?
Not yet. A short stretch of the Blue Line opened in October 2025 on the eastern side of the city, and an airport connection is only at feasibility-study stage. Use a cab or auto.
How early should I arrive?
Two hours for a domestic flight is comfortable — but add a buffer during the 6–10 AM departure bank and in the December–January fog season.
Can I buy alcohol at Patna Airport?
No. Bihar has been a dry state since 2016, so there is no alcohol on sale at the airport, in hotels or anywhere in the state.
Is Patna the closest airport to Bodh Gaya?
Gaya Airport (GAY) is closer to Bodh Gaya, but it has limited, largely seasonal service. Most travellers fly into Patna and drive the 110 km, which takes about 2.5–3 hours.
What is Digi Yatra and does it work here?
It’s India’s opt-in face-recognition system for airport entry and boarding. It has been live at Patna since July 2024 — register in the app with your ID and boarding pass before you travel.
This guide was verified in August 2026 against official airport, airline and government sources. Details change — always reconfirm anything critical (terminals, timings, transport) before you travel.
