Current weather at TRZ
Loading current conditions…
Live conditions via OpenWeatherMap. Trichy is one of the hotter cities in Tamil Nadu — April to June regularly pushes past 38°C. The northeast monsoon (October–December) brings the heavy rain, and cyclone systems in the Bay of Bengal can disrupt flights in that window.
Terminal
One integrated terminal
Trichy has a single integrated terminal handling both domestic and international flights. A new integrated terminal significantly expanded capacity — larger immigration, more baggage belts and a bigger security zone, all built specifically around the airport’s heavy Gulf traffic.
TRZ is an international airport that runs mostly at night. The Gulf and Southeast Asia departures cluster in the late evening and small hours, which is when the terminal is busiest — a quiet afternoon here tells you nothing about what 1 AM looks like.
Trichy is one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest airports for international passengers, driven by decades of Gulf work migration and Southeast Asian Tamil diaspora links.
Carriers have included Air India Express, IndiGo, AirAsia, Batik Air, Scoot and SriLankan Airlines. Gulf frequencies shift with demand — Sharjah service expanded in 2026.
Smaller than the international side. Chennai is the dominant route by a wide margin, with Bengaluru, Kochi and Delhi also served.
Many domestic flights here exist to feed the international wave — useful if you’re connecting, but check whether your bags are through-checked.
Trichy is an operating base for Air India Express, which is why the airline’s presence here is disproportionate to the city’s size.
The airport opened in 1936 and gained full international status in 2012. Runway re-carpeting and further upgrades have followed.
Route networks at Trichy change with the schedule season, particularly on the Gulf sectors. Confirm your flight on the airline’s own app before travelling.
Flying out
Departures
Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic. The three-hour rule matters here more than the terminal’s modest size suggests: the international departures bunch together at night, and emigration checks add time for a large share of passengers.
Before security
- Entry: a printed or mobile boarding pass and photo ID are checked at the terminal doors.
- Pre-security food is limited. If you’re early, either eat outside the airport or clear security and use the airside food court.
- Check-in typically closes 60 minutes before international departures, 45 before domestic.
The night wave
- Most Gulf and Southeast Asia departures leave late evening through the small hours.
- Queues at check-in and immigration are longest in that window — an on-time arrival at a busy hour still means waiting.
- If you’re being dropped off at 2 AM, arrange the return trip for whoever is driving; cabs thin out.
Landing here
Arrivals
International arrivals clear immigration, then baggage reclaim, then customs before the exit. Domestic arrivals go straight to the belt. The airport is close to the city, so you’re into Trichy quickly.
In the arrivals hall
- Prepaid taxi counter and app-cab pickup are both available — the simplest routes into the city.
- ATMs are available; forex counters serve the international sectors.
- Arriving at 3 AM? Most Gulf flights land overnight — arrange a pickup in advance rather than hoping for a cab.
Meeting someone?
- Greeters wait outside the terminal doors; the arrivals area gets genuinely crowded when a Gulf flight lands, as families turn out in numbers.
- Parking is available, and the short city distance keeps pickups simple.
- Onward to Thanjavur, Madurai or Chidambaram? Trichy is well-placed for the temple circuit — arrange a car if arriving late.
At the border
Immigration, emigration & baggage
Trichy handles a large volume of workers travelling to and from the Gulf, so the emigration side of the process matters here in a way it doesn’t at a tourist airport. Treat this as orientation, not legal advice.
Indian workers heading to the Gulf
- Passports are either ECR (Emigration Check Required) or ECNR. ECR passport holders travelling to certain countries for employment need emigration clearance through the eMigrate system.
- Carry your employment documents, visa and any clearance paperwork — checks at Trichy are routine, not exceptional.
- Do not rely on an agent’s assurance that paperwork is “handled”. Verify your own status before you reach the airport.
Returning residents
- Duty-free allowances apply on return; check current CBIC limits before shopping abroad.
- Gold is the most commonly misjudged item on Gulf routes — allowances are limited and enforced. Declare rather than risk it.
- Foreign cash above roughly US$5,000, or higher totals in instruments, must be declared.
Foreign nationals
- e-Visa holders can enter through Trichy — carry the printed ETA approval. See our how to apply guide.
- Long-stay visitors may need FRRO registration — see our FRRO guide.
- Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in cabin baggage only.
Emigration, customs and visa rules change — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in), eMigrate (emigrate.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Use the Departures / Arrivals toggle inside the board below to switch between them.
Live data provided by a third-party service; for authoritative status use the official AAI Tiruchirappalli Airport page or your airline’s app. Note that a mostly-empty board in the afternoon is normal here.
Comfort & cash
Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange
Lounges
- Trichy has lounge facilities including pay-per-use access — modest compared with a metro airport, but genuinely useful on a 2 AM departure.
- Access is typically via credit-card lounge programmes or paying at the door.
- Card access changed across India in late 2025 — many banks moved to direct partnerships with spend conditions. Confirm your card still qualifies.
ATMs & forex
- ATMs are available landside; airside options are limited, so draw cash before security.
- Forex counters serve the international sectors, but airport rates carry a premium — exchange only what you need.
- Tamil Nadu runs heavily on UPI; a working card plus small cash covers the rest.
Inside the terminal
Shopping, food & restrooms
Shopping
A duty-free on the international side plus convenience retail and a small set of shops. Nothing extensive — buy in the city if you want Thanjavur crafts, silk or brassware at sensible prices.
Food
Tamil Nadu-style meal counters, quick-service chains and tea and coffee kiosks. Pre-security options are limited, so clearing security early and using the airside food court is usually the better plan. Budget ₹150–400 for something light.
Restrooms & essentials
Clean and well-signed with accessible facilities and drinking-water points. Wi-Fi typically needs an SMS code, so an Indian mobile number helps — worth sorting before a long overnight wait.
Extra help
Assistance & accessibility
Wheelchairs & reduced mobility
Free wheelchair assistance is a regulatory requirement at Indian airports. Request it when booking, at least 48 hours ahead, and confirm at check-in. The compact terminal makes assistance straightforward once you’re inside.
First-time flyers
A large share of TRZ’s international passengers are travelling for work, sometimes for the first time. Airline ground staff will walk someone through check-in, emigration and security if asked — ask at the counter, not at the gate.
Families & overnight flights
Baby-care facilities are available. With the night schedule, plan for children being awake at unusual hours — the terminal has seating but is not designed for sleeping.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation
Trichy has one of the shortest airport-to-city distances of any Indian international airport — roughly 5–8 km south of the centre. Most journeys take 15–25 minutes.
Taxi & ride-hailing
- Prepaid taxi counter in arrivals — fixed fare, paid inside, no negotiation.
- Ola and Uber operate, though availability thins in the small hours when many international flights land.
- Hotel pickups are widely offered and worth it for an overnight arrival.
Bus, auto & rail
- City buses run past the airport on the Trichy–Madurai road; very cheap, less convenient with luggage.
- Autos are readily available — agree the fare first or use an app.
- Rail: Tiruchirappalli Junction is a major hub with connections across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
Onward destinations
- Thanjavur ~55 km · Madurai ~130 km · Chidambaram ~135 km · Kumbakonam ~90 km.
- Trichy is the natural base for the Chola temple circuit, several of which are UNESCO-listed.
- Velankanni and the coastal pilgrimage sites are also within a few hours by road.

Hotels near Trichy Airport
Because the airport is close to the city, almost every Trichy hotel is effectively an airport hotel. The main clusters are around Cantonment, Thillai Nagar and the Junction area.

Got a long layover?
Attractions near the airport
Under 30 min away
- Rockfort and the Ucchi Pillayar Temple — the city’s defining landmark, a temple complex on an ancient outcrop with 400-odd steps and a view over the Kaveri.
- Srirangam — the vast Ranganathaswamy temple, one of the largest functioning temple complexes in the world.
- St Joseph’s College and the Cantonment — colonial-era architecture in the old British quarter.
Worth it with a full day
- Thanjavur — the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the high point of Chola architecture, ~55 km.
- Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram — the other two Great Living Chola Temples.
- Kumbakonam — temple town and the centre of the Mahamaham festival, ~90 km.
- Chettinad — mansions and the region’s famous cuisine, ~90 km south.
Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit. With the short city distance, Rockfort and Srirangam are both realistic on a five-hour gap.
Sacred Trichy
Temples, churches & shrines
The major temples
- Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam — the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams, with seven concentric enclosures and a 236-ft gopuram.
- Ucchi Pillayar Temple, Rockfort — the Ganesha temple at the summit, reached by a rock-cut stairway.
- Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval — one of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing water.
- Samayapuram Mariamman Temple — one of Tamil Nadu’s wealthiest and busiest temples, ~20 km.
Beyond the temples
- Our Lady of Lourdes Church — a striking neo-Gothic basilica beside St Joseph’s College.
- Velankanni — the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, a major Marian pilgrimage site, ~150 km on the coast.
- Trichy has long-established mosques serving the city’s substantial Muslim community, many families of which have Gulf ties.
At Srirangam and most active Tamil temples, dress modestly, remove footwear, and note that non-Hindus may be restricted from inner sanctums. Photography rules vary by shrine — look for the signs.
When things go wrong
Lost & found and airline help
Lost something at the airport?
- Trichy Airport is run by the Airports Authority of India. Report losses at the airport information desk or to the AAI duty manager.
- Left something on the plane? That’s the airline’s responsibility — go to their counter before you leave the building.
- Missing checked baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airline’s baggage desk in arrivals before exiting. Claims are much harder afterwards.
- Carry a photo of your bag and its tag number; it speeds everything up.
Airline customer service
Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:
- Air India Express — airindiaexpress.com → Support
- IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 in-app chat)
- AirAsia and Batik Air — via their own official sites
- Scoot — flyscoot.com → Contact Us
- SriLankan Airlines — srilankan.com → Contact Us
India’s aviation grievance portal, AirSewa, handles complaints that airlines don’t resolve — including baggage, refunds and denied boarding.
Health & emergencies
Hospitals near the airport
At the airport
The terminal has a medical room and ambulance access — ask any airport staff member or CISF officer. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112; ambulances can also be called on 102 or 108.
Major hospitals within ~30 min
- Kauvery Hospital, Trichy — well-known private multi-speciality, close to the airport.
- Apollo Speciality Hospitals — private tertiary care in the city.
- Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital — the main government hospital.
- ABC Hospital and other private facilities in the Cantonment area.
Trichy is a regional medical centre for central Tamil Nadu. Private hospitals generally expect payment upfront or a direct insurance tie-up — worth arranging travel cover before you fly.
Diplomatic help
Consular help for foreign visitors
There are no foreign consulates in Tiruchirappalli. Tamil Nadu is covered by the consulates in Chennai, roughly an hour away by air or five to six hours by road.
Where to go
- Chennai — consulates including the United States, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, mostly around Nungambakkam and Cathedral Road.
- New Delhi (Chanakyapuri) — all embassies and high commissions.
- Most missions handle citizen emergencies by phone first — call before travelling anywhere.
For Indian workers abroad
- If a family member runs into trouble in the Gulf, the Indian mission in that country is the first point of contact, not a local office here.
- The Ministry of External Affairs runs the MADAD grievance portal for Indians overseas.
- Keep copies of employment contracts and visa documents at home as well as abroad.
Off-airport dining
Restaurants near the airport
Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & food section above.
Near the airport
The airport road and the Cantonment area a few minutes away have plenty of restaurants and hotel dining. Given the short distance, eating in the city before a night flight is easy and much better value.
Late-night options
With so many departures after midnight, some hotel restaurants and roadside eateries keep long hours — but don’t assume. If your flight is at 2 AM, eat before 10 PM or plan on the airside food court.
Eat Tamil
Trichy does classic South Indian well: banana-leaf meals, dosa and idli at the old tiffin houses, and Chettinad cuisine from the region to the south — properly spiced, and unlike anything else in Tamil Nadu.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How many terminals does Trichy Airport have?
One integrated terminal handling both domestic and international flights, with a new terminal having significantly expanded capacity.
Where does Trichy fly internationally?
Mainly the Gulf and Southeast Asia — Sharjah, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Colombo among others, with carriers including Air India Express, IndiGo, AirAsia, Batik Air, Scoot and SriLankan Airlines. Frequencies change by season.
Why do so many flights leave in the middle of the night?
The Gulf and Southeast Asia schedules cluster overnight, which suits connecting banks at the other end. It means the terminal is busiest between late evening and the small hours.
How far is the airport from the city?
Roughly 5–8 km south of the centre — one of the shortest airport-to-city distances among India’s international airports. Expect 15–25 minutes by cab.
How early should I arrive?
Three hours for international, two for domestic. The three-hour rule matters here because departures bunch together and emigration checks add time.
What is emigration clearance and do I need it?
Indian passports are either ECR or ECNR. ECR holders travelling to certain countries for employment need clearance through the eMigrate system. Check your own passport status and paperwork rather than relying on an agent.
Can I visit Srirangam on a layover?
Yes — it’s about 20 minutes from the airport, and both Srirangam and Rockfort are realistic on a five-hour gap. International transit passengers need a valid visa to leave the airport.
Is Trichy a good base for the Chola temples?
The best one. Thanjavur is ~55 km, Kumbakonam ~90 km, and Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram are both within easy reach — all part of the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO listing.
This guide was verified in August 2026 against official airport, airline and government sources. Details change — always reconfirm anything critical (terminals, visas, emigration rules, timings) before you travel.
