Loading current conditions…
Live conditions via OpenWeatherMap. This is the plains temperature — Tirumala, up on the hills, runs roughly 10–15°C cooler, so carry a light jacket even when Tirupati is hot. April–June is punishing on the plains; October to March is the comfortable window.
Terminal
A compact airport with one job
Tirupati’s airport is at Renigunta, about 15 km from the city. The terminal is compact but modern, with a second passenger terminal opened in 2022 to handle the pilgrim surges. Boarding is still often by bus or walk-out rather than aerobridge.
The airport is 15 km from Tirupati city, but around 40 km from the temple itself. Tirumala is up the Alipiri ghat road — 60–90 minutes in normal traffic, 2–3 hours on festival weekends. Almost every planning mistake here starts with conflating the two numbers.
Direct services to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru, with other cities appearing seasonally.
Fares are often lowest midweek. Friday and Sunday carry the pilgrimage weekend premium.
Chennai (MAA) fares are often lower thanks to far more competition — but it’s roughly 135 km of extra road travel to Tirupati.
Fly into TIR if you’re travelling with elderly relatives or on a tight schedule. Take Chennai only if the fare gap is large and the drive doesn’t trouble you.
The airport carries international status, but scheduled international operations have been limited.
Overseas devotees generally connect through Chennai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru. Check current schedules rather than assuming a direct route exists.
Route networks change with the schedule season and surge around festivals. Confirm your flight on the airline’s own app before travelling.

Darshan booking & what to expect
Tirumala Venkateswara is one of the most heavily attended pilgrimages on earth, and the temple is run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) on a booking system. Sort the darshan before the flight — the ticket, not the airfare, is the scarce thing.
Book only through the official TTD channel — ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in. Tirupati attracts a heavy volume of fraudulent “guaranteed darshan” and room-booking sites and touts. TTD tickets and Tirumala rooms are released in quotas that sell out within minutes, and nobody legitimate can bypass that for a fee.
How booking works
- Register on the TTD portal and verify your identity, then choose Seva and Darshan and a timed slot.
- Special Entry Darshan is the standard paid tier most visitors use, released in monthly quotas some weeks ahead.
- Sarva Darshan is free but unticketed, with the longest waits.
- Quota release dates are announced by TTD — be online the moment they open.
Queue realities
- Waits in the Vaikuntam queue complex commonly run four to eight hours on ordinary days.
- Weekends, school holidays and festival windows — Brahmotsavam above all — extend that considerably.
- The queue complex has seating and water, but it is a long wait. Plan the day around it, not the reverse.
What to carry & wear
- Entry gates check your darshan ticket, government photo ID and itinerary. Carry printouts.
- Traditional Indian dress is required — dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men; saree, half-saree or salwar-kameez for women.
- Mobile phones and leather items must be deposited in lockers before the sanctum. Travel light for the temple.
- Bring a light jacket for the hilltop, comfortable footwear, water and any medication.
TTD ticket tiers, prices and quota release windows change. Verify everything against ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in before booking flights, and disregard any third party promising guaranteed access.
The 40 km that matter
Airport to Tirumala
Tirupati city sits at the foothills; Tirumala is up the ghat road above it. From the airport you’re looking at roughly 40 km in total — and how you cover it depends on budget, luggage and who you’re travelling with.
By bus
- APSRTC buses run the route, and from Tirupati’s Central Bus Station they leave for Tirumala every few minutes for a modest fare.
- The cheapest option overall — expect the full airport-to-Tirumala journey to cost a few hundred rupees at most.
- Journey time is around an hour and a half including the winding climb.
By car
- Prepaid taxi counters in arrivals offer fixed fares to both the city and the hills; Ola and Uber also operate, including at night with a surcharge.
- Private cabs up to Tirumala are the practical choice with luggage or elderly relatives.
- Private vehicles need a vehicle token at the Alipiri checkpoint.
On foot
- Alipiri Mettu — around 3,500 steps, typically 2–3 hours. Lit and patrolled, and the traditional route.
- Srivari Mettu — shorter and steeper from Srinivasa Mangapuram, roughly 2–2.5 hours.
- Foot pilgrims can obtain Divya Darshan tokens at the top, issued in limited daily numbers.
Allow 2–3 hours for the climb on festival weekends rather than the usual 60–90 minutes. Ghat road traffic is the most commonly underestimated part of a Tirupati trip.
Flying out
Departures
Arrive 2 hours before a domestic departure. The terminal is small and rarely the problem — the descent from Tirumala is. Queue overruns and ghat traffic are what make people miss flights here.
Planning the last day
- Take an evening flight home if you’re doing darshan that day. An after-5pm departure gives you buffer for both the queue and the road.
- Don’t book a morning flight for the day after a late darshan slot without a night at the bottom of the hill.
- Last TTD buses down from Tirumala run in the early evening — check current timings.
At the terminal
- Entry: a printed or mobile boarding pass and photo ID are checked at the terminal doors.
- Check-in typically closes 45 minutes before domestic departures.
- Carrying laddu prasadam home? It travels fine in cabin or checked bags — it’s a solid, not a liquid.
Landing here
Arrivals
Domestic arrivals go straight to baggage reclaim and out. Most people are moving immediately onward — either to a city hotel or straight up the hill.
In the arrivals hall
- Prepaid taxi booths with fixed fares to the city and to Tirumala.
- An Andhra Pradesh Tourism desk offers guidance on local attractions and darshan booking.
- Car rental desks, ATMs and APSRTC buses to Tirupati Central Bus Station are all available.
The efficient plan
- Many pilgrims complete the whole visit within about 36 hours.
- Land in the morning, transfer straight to accommodation, and take an evening or next-morning darshan slot booked in advance.
- Never accept the first quote from a driver who approaches you — use the official prepaid counter.

Comfort & cash
Lounges, ATMs & money
Lounges
- Limited provision — this is a compact regional terminal, not a hub.
- Where available, access is via credit-card programmes or pay-per-use.
- Card access changed across India in late 2025 — confirm your card still qualifies rather than assuming.
Money
- ATMs are available; draw what you need before security.
- Carry cash for bus fares, vehicle tokens, locker deposits and offerings — plenty of the Tirumala experience is cash-based.
- UPI works well in Tirupati city and increasingly on the hill, but don’t depend on it inside the temple complex.
Inside the terminal
Shopping, food & restrooms
Shopping
Shops in the departures hall sell traditional handicrafts, religious artefacts and travel essentials. Prasadam and laddus come from the temple itself, not the airport — pre-book extra laddus through TTD.
Food
Food outlets and snack bars serving South Indian dishes and quick refreshments. Budget ₹150–400 for something light. Note that Tirumala itself is strictly vegetarian, as are most places in the city.
Facilities
Clean and well-signed with accessible facilities, a designated smoking lounge airside, short and long-term parking, and a dedicated counter for tracing misplaced luggage.
Extra help
Assistance & accessibility
Wheelchairs & reduced mobility
Free wheelchair assistance is a regulatory requirement at Indian airports. Request it when booking, at least 48 hours ahead. TTD also has provisions for elderly and differently-abled pilgrims at Tirumala — check the current arrangements on the TTD portal before you travel.
Elderly pilgrims
This is why families choose TIR over Chennai. The 40 km transfer is far kinder than 135 km, and the queue, not the journey, is the demanding part. Book a paid darshan tier and a car rather than the bus and the free queue.
Families
Baby-care facilities are available at the airport. On the hill, the ghat road is winding and motion sickness is common — and remember the phone deposit rule applies to everyone in the group.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation
The airport is at Renigunta, about 15 km from Tirupati — 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. For the onward leg up to Tirumala, see the hill section above.
Taxi & bus
- Prepaid taxi to Tirupati city typically runs a few hundred rupees; app cabs operate day and night with a night surcharge.
- APSRTC buses connect the airport to Tirupati Central Bus Station — the cheapest route into town.
- Car rental desks in arrivals handle self-drive and chauffeur bookings.
Rail
- Renigunta Junction is about 10 km away and is the bigger interchange — many trains stop there but not at Tirupati.
- Tirupati Junction connects to Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.
- Book trains well ahead for festival and weekend dates — they sell out fast.
Regional
- Chennai ~135 km · Bengaluru ~250 km · Sri City SEZ and the electronics clusters are nearby.
- Kanipakam ~70 km · Srikalahasti ~35 km — both common additions to a Tirupati trip.
- The airport also serves growing business traffic, not just pilgrimage.

Where to stay
The real choice is city or hilltop. TTD runs its own accommodation at Tirumala at very low rates, but it books out fast; Tirupati city has the conventional hotels.

Beyond the main temple
Other sites around Tirupati
In and near the city
- Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Tiruchanur — traditionally visited alongside Tirumala; many consider the pilgrimage incomplete without it.
- ISKCON Tirupati and Kapila Theertham — a waterfall temple at the foot of the hills.
- Sri Venkateswara National Park and the deer park on the hill road.
Day trips
- Srikalahasti ~35 km — one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing air.
- Kanipakam ~70 km — the Varasiddhi Vinayaka temple.
- Chandragiri Fort ~15 km — Vijayanagara-era palaces, an easy detour.
- Talakona Falls — the state’s tallest waterfall, in the hills to the west.
A layover isn’t enough for Tirumala — with 40 km each way and a multi-hour queue, the temple needs a planned overnight. Chandragiri or Srikalahasti are more realistic on a short gap.
When things go wrong
Lost & found and airline help
Lost something at the airport?
- Tirupati Airport is run by the Airports Authority of India, and has a dedicated counter for tracing misplaced luggage in the terminal.
- Left something on the plane? That’s the airline’s responsibility — go to their counter before you leave the building.
- Missing checked baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report at the airline’s baggage desk in arrivals before exiting.
- Carry a photo of your bag and its tag number.
Airline customer service
Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:
- IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 in-app chat)
- Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
- Air India Express — airindiaexpress.com → Support
- Alliance Air — allianceair.in → Contact Us
India’s aviation grievance portal, AirSewa, handles complaints that airlines don’t resolve — including baggage, refunds and denied boarding.
Health & emergencies
Hospitals near the airport
At the airport
The terminal has a medical room and ambulance access — ask any airport staff member or CISF officer. India’s all-in-one emergency number is 112; ambulances can also be called on 102 or 108.
Major hospitals
- SVIMS (Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences) — the region’s major tertiary hospital, TTD-associated.
- Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia Government General Hospital — the main public hospital.
- Private hospitals and clinics operate across Tirupati city.
- Medical facilities exist at Tirumala too, given the volume of pilgrims on the hill.
Long queue waits, heat on the plains and the climb affect elderly pilgrims most. Carry water and medication, and don’t attempt the stepped footpaths in the midday heat.
Off-airport dining
Eating in Tirupati & Tirumala
Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the terminal section above.
At Tirumala
TTD runs free anna prasadam dining halls serving thousands of pilgrims daily — a remarkable operation and part of the experience. The hilltop is strictly vegetarian, with no alcohol.
In Tirupati city
Restaurants cluster around the bus station, the railway station and Renigunta Road. Overwhelmingly vegetarian, with plenty of good South Indian meals at low prices.
The famous one
The Tirupati laddu — the temple’s prasadam, made in the TTD kitchens under geographical indication protection. Devotees receive it after darshan, and extras can be pre-booked through TTD.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How far is Tirupati Airport from the Tirumala temple?
About 40 km in total — 15 km to Tirupati city, then up the Alipiri ghat road. Allow 60–90 minutes normally, and 2–3 hours on festival weekends.
Should I fly into Tirupati or Chennai?
Chennai fares are often lower thanks to more competition, but it’s roughly 135 km of extra road travel. Fly into Tirupati if you’re with elderly relatives or short on time; choose Chennai only if the fare gap is large.
How do I book darshan?
Through the official TTD portal at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in — register, verify identity, then choose a darshan type and timed slot. Quotas are released in advance and sell out within minutes. Ignore any third party promising guaranteed access.
How long is the queue?
Commonly four to eight hours in the Vaikuntam queue complex on ordinary days, and considerably longer on weekends, holidays and during Brahmotsavam.
Is there a dress code at Tirumala?
Yes, and it’s enforced. Traditional Indian attire is required — dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men; saree, half-saree or salwar-kameez for women. Mobile phones and leather items must be deposited in lockers before the sanctum.
What’s the cheapest way from the airport to Tirumala?
APSRTC buses, via Tirupati Central Bus Station, where services up the hill run every few minutes. The full journey costs a few hundred rupees at most.
Can I walk up to Tirumala?
Yes. Alipiri Mettu is around 3,500 steps and takes 2–3 hours; Srivari Mettu is shorter and steeper. Both are traditional routes, and foot pilgrims can obtain Divya Darshan tokens at the top.
How long should I allow for the whole trip?
Many pilgrims complete it within about 36 hours: land in the morning, darshan that evening or the next morning, and an evening flight out on day two — which leaves buffer for queue overruns and ghat traffic.
This guide was verified in August 2026 against official airport, airline and TTD sources. Darshan tiers, quotas and prices change — always confirm current details on the official TTD website before booking flights or accommodation.
