Terminals
Which terminal is yours?
TRV has two terminals, built opposite each other across the runway, connected by a walkway (5–10 minute walk) — no shuttle bus needed, similar to Kochi’s friendly layout.
Most official sources (IndiGo, Adani One — the airport operator) list Terminal 1 as domestic and Terminal 2 as international. A small number of third-party sites state the reverse, and Air India’s own split between the two terminals adds to the confusion. Trust the terminal printed on your boarding pass over any general guide, including this one.
Opened 1992, Kerala’s original domestic terminal — 18 check-in counters, 3 security kiosks.
Routes: direct domestic connections to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi and other major metros.
Newer, larger terminal (first flight 2011) with jetways and 8 aircraft parking bays — 1.8 million passenger annual capacity.
Gulf-heavy schedule: direct flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Doha, Kuwait, Muscat, Bahrain, Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam — TRV’s domestic and international passenger volumes are nearly evenly split, unusual for an Indian airport this size.
TRV is now managed by Adani Airports, following a 2020s privatisation. Always confirm your terminal on your ticket or the Adani One app before heading out.
Flying out
Departures
Arrive 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international — the airport’s own guidance suggests up to 4 hours for international during peak periods, so treat 3 hours as a minimum, not a target. Add 30 minutes during festive peaks (Diwali, Christmas–New Year) and Friday/Sunday evenings.
Before security
- Entry: boarding pass/ticket plus photo ID checked at terminal entry gates.
- Web check-in opens 48 hours before departure on most carriers and closes 1–2 hours before — use it to skip counter queues.
- Terminals operate 24/7, with many international departures scheduled overnight for Gulf connections.
Good to know
- Designated smoking areas are on the ground and first floors of the Security Holding Area.
- Free Wi-Fi gives 30 minutes of access — requires a valid Indian mobile number for the verification SMS; extended high-speed access can be purchased.
- Weather-related delays (monsoon season) do happen — check the live tracker before leaving for the airport.
Landing here
Arrivals
International arrivals: immigration, baggage reclaim, customs (green channel if nothing to declare), then the arrivals hall. Domestic arrivals go straight to reclaim.
In the arrivals hall
- SIM cards: telecom counters in international arrivals — bring your passport and a photo.
- Currency exchange counters are available for arriving international passengers.
- Given the volume of Gulf flights, expect the arrivals hall to be genuinely busy in the pre-dawn hours — a normal pattern here, not a sign of trouble.
Meeting someone?
- Greeters wait outside the terminal exits — entry to the building requires a ticket.
- The Pranaam service (bookable via Adani One) offers paid meet-and-assist for arriving passengers who want extra help.
At the border
Immigration & baggage rules
Rules differ by who you are. Here’s the short version — treat it as orientation, not legal advice, and check official Indian government sources for your specific situation.
Indian citizens
- Immigration applies to international trips only — passport, boarding pass, and destination visa where needed.
- Fast Track Immigration (FTI-TTP) e-gates are being rolled out at major Indian airports — check current availability at TRV before relying on it.
- Returning residents get a duty-free allowance (general goods up to a rupee limit, plus limited alcohol and tobacco) — check current CBIC limits before shopping abroad. This matters heavily at TRV, given how many passengers are returning NRIs from the Gulf.
OCI holders & PRs abroad
- OCI card holders use visa-free entry with a valid foreign passport + OCI card.
- Indian-origin travellers with foreign PR (e.g. US green card) but no OCI need a visa/e-visa like other foreign nationals.
Foreign nationals
- e-Visa holders: follow the dedicated e-Visa lanes at T2 immigration — carry the printed ETA approval.
- Regular visas use the standard foreigner queues; complete the arrival card from the plane or the hall.
- Customs: green channel if nothing to declare; currency above prescribed limits (foreign cash beyond ~US$5,000, or higher total instruments) must be declared.
Allowances and visa rules change — verify with the Bureau of Immigration (boi.gov.in) and Indian Customs (cbic.gov.in) before you fly.

Comfort & cash
Lounges, ATMs & currency exchange
Lounges
- Domestic lounges (T1) — hot meals, snacks, beverages, Wi-Fi, comfortable seating.
- International lounges (T2) — premium lounges operated by airlines and third-party providers, genuinely valuable given how many flights depart overnight.
- Access via Priority Pass, select credit cards (Axis Magnus, HDFC Infinia, ICICI Sapphiro, SBI Elite), airline business/first class tickets, or walk-in payment.
- Card note: bank lounge programmes changed across India in late 2025 — confirm your card’s current access before relying on it.
ATMs & forex
- ATMs are available throughout the terminals.
- Currency exchange counters serve international departures and arrivals — airport rates carry a premium, so change only what you need.
- India runs heavily on UPI; a working international card plus a small cash reserve covers most travellers.
Inside the terminal
Shopping, restaurants & restrooms
Shopping
T2 has duty-free shopping for international passengers; both terminals offer retail and dining. Look for Kerala spices, coffee, and cashews as authentic souvenirs.
Food
Expect a genuine mix of South Indian staples — dosa, idli, appam, Kerala parotta with chicken or vegetable curry — alongside North Indian food, sandwiches, and coffee. Kerala filter coffee and fresh fruit juices are widely available; the international terminal also has multi-cuisine restaurants post-security.
Restrooms & essentials
Restrooms are frequent and well-signed with accessible facilities. The airport also has clinic and pharmacy services, ATMs, and currency exchange throughout.

The easy news
The two terminals are built opposite each other across the runway and connected by a walkway — about a 5–10 minute walk, no shuttle needed. Another traveller-friendly layout, similar to Kochi’s.
Connecting flights
International→domestic: you still clear immigration, collect bags, and check in again — keep at least 2.5–3 hours. If TRV doesn’t have your onward route direct, connecting via Kochi (COK, a 30-minute flight or 4–5 hour drive) opens up a broader network, including more Southeast Asian destinations.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation
The airport is genuinely close
At just ~3.7 km from the city centre, TRV is one of the most conveniently located major airports in India — no metro needed for most trips, since even city-centre hotels are a short ride away.
Taxi & ride-hailing
- Prepaid taxi/auto counters at arrivals — city centre in 15–25 minutes.
- To Kovalam Beach (the classic reason to fly into TRV): 25–35 minutes, roughly ₹400–600 by prepaid taxi.
- Uber/Ola also operate from the airport.
Rail
- Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station is about 6 km away — 15–25 minutes by taxi, useful if you’re continuing onward by train.
- No metro or dedicated airport rail link currently exists.

Hotels near Trivandrum Airport

Attractions near the airport
Under 30 min away
- Shankumugham Beach — the airport is barely 1 km from the Arabian Sea; this beach is the closest, easiest option for a quick sea breeze.
- Napier Museum & Zoo — Thiruvananthapuram’s historic museum complex, ~15 min.
- Kovalam Beach — Kerala’s most famous beach resort town, 25–35 min; TRV is genuinely the best arrival point for Kerala’s southern coast.
Worth it with 6+ hours
- Kanyakumari — India’s southernmost tip, where three seas meet; a longer trip (~1.5–2 hrs) but genuinely unique given TRV’s position as the subcontinent’s southernmost airport.
- Varkala — cliffside beach town, ~1 hour, popular with longer-stay travellers.
Leaving the airport between flights? International transit passengers need a valid visa to exit.
Sacred Trivandrum
Temples, churches, mosques & more
Closest to the airport
- Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple — one of the most significant Vishnu temples in India and among the wealthiest temples in the world, right in the city centre just ~3.7 km from the airport. A major reason many travellers fly into TRV specifically.
Elsewhere in the city
- Attukal Bhagavathy Temple — famous Devi temple, host of the record-setting Attukal Pongala festival.
- Palayam Juma Masjid — historic mosque in the city centre.
- St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Palayam — a principal Catholic church, notable for standing near both the mosque and a Hindu temple on the same street.
Note: Padmanabhaswamy Temple has a strict traditional dress code and, at times, entry restrictions by faith — check current visitor rules before going.
When things go wrong
Lost & found and airline help
Lost something at the airport?
- A lost & found centre is located at the terminal — report there or check the Adani One website for the current process.
- Left something on the plane? Items lost onboard the aircraft are kept by the respective airline — fill out the lost & found form on the airline’s website, not the airport’s.
- Found something unattended or suspicious? The airport advises not touching it — report it to staff immediately.
Airline customer service
Use only the contact details on airlines’ official websites — fake “customer care numbers” planted in search results are a common scam in India:
- Air India — airindia.com → Contact Us
- IndiGo — goindigo.in → Contact Us (24/7 chat in-app)
- SpiceJet — spicejet.com → Contact Us
- Akasa Air — akasaair.com → Support
- Gulf/international carriers: use the airline’s own site, or their T2 ticketing counters.

Major hospitals within ~20 min
- Sree Gokulam Medical College & Research Foundation — full-service hospital, close to the airport.
- KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram — leading private multi-speciality hospital in the city centre.

Diplomatic help
Consulates in Trivandrum
Given Kerala’s huge Gulf-connected population and TRV’s nearly-50/50 international traffic split, several countries maintain honorary consuls in Thiruvananthapuram for community and emergency support.
In Trivandrum
Look for honorary consulates for Gulf states and other nations with strong Kerala ties, generally in the city centre — check current listings before you travel, as honorary consul postings change more often than full consulates.
If Trivandrum can’t help
- Fuller consular services for most nationalities are in Chennai or Mumbai.
- For a lost passport you’ll typically also need a police report (Kerala Police supports online lost-property complaints).
- In a genuine emergency, your country’s Delhi embassy can coordinate remotely even without a local consul.
Stocking up
Groceries & essentials nearby
Physical stores
- Given the airport’s central location, city-centre pharmacies and supermarkets are just 10–15 minutes away — no need to venture far.
The shortcut: delivery apps
Staying near the airport or city centre? Quick-commerce apps — Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart — deliver groceries, toiletries, chargers, and medicine, with solid coverage in central Thiruvananthapuram.
Off-airport dining
Restaurants & bars near the airport
Everything below is outside the terminal — for food inside the airport, see the shopping & restaurants section above.
City-centre dining
Being so close to the city, you have real options within 10–15 minutes — from classic Kerala restaurants to hotel dining at Vivanta and other central properties.
Kovalam Beach dining
If your layover stretches to Kovalam (25–35 min), beachfront restaurants and seafood shacks make for a genuinely worthwhile detour — fresh catch and sea views most airports can’t offer.
Don’t skip: Kerala cuisine
Prioritise genuine Kerala food — fish curry with rice, appam and stew, or a full sadya thali on a banana leaf — over generic multi-cuisine menus wherever you land.
Quick answers

No — they’re built opposite each other across the runway, connected by a walkway, about a 5–10 minute walk. No shuttle needed.
How far is the airport from the city and from Kovalam Beach?
Just ~3.7 km from the city centre — one of the most centrally located major airports in India. Kovalam Beach is 25–35 minutes away.
How early should I arrive?
2 hours before domestic flights, 3–4 hours before international — the airport’s own guidance suggests up to 4 hours during peak periods.
