Which Airport Should I Fly Into?

India often has more than one right answer. Start here if you’re not sure which guide matches your actual trip.

For most destinations the right airport is obvious. But a handful of trips have two genuinely valid options, and choosing wrong can cost you hours of transfer time, a mountain drive after dark, or a much more expensive taxi. Those are the ones worth reading before you book.

RULE

Check the airport name on your ticket, not just the code. Codes get reused when airports move or open — Visakhapatnam and Mumbai are both live examples right now. The three letters alone are no longer enough to tell you where you’re landing.

The real two-airport decisions

Where the choice actually changes your trip.

Goa — north or south

GOI (Dabolim) for South Goa — Colva, Benaulim, Palolem. GOX (Manohar / Mopa) for North Goa — Calangute, Baga, Anjuna, Arambol. They are about 70 km apart, so picking wrong adds real time and cost at both ends of the trip.

Mumbai — BOM or NMI

BOM is the established, larger airport. Navi Mumbai International (NMI) opened more recently and is a long way from the western suburbs. Check which one your specific flight uses before booking a hotel or a car.

Visakhapatnam — the code moved

VTZ now means Bhogapuram, about 45 km from Vizag city, not the old airport inside town. Scheduled flights moved in August 2026 and the code went with them. Old directions, taxi habits and listings still point at the wrong place.

North India

Rajasthan

Jaipur (JAI) is the standard gateway for the whole state and the usual start of the Jaipur–Jodhpur–Udaipur–Jaisalmer circuit.

Jaipur guide →

Punjab & the Golden Temple

Amritsar (ATQ) puts you 20–30 minutes from the Golden Temple — far better than flying to Delhi and driving up.

Amritsar guide →

Himachal & the hill stations

Chandigarh (IXC) is the most practical air gateway to Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala. The small hill airports exist but are weather-dependent and unreliable.

Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow (LKO) for the state’s centre and north. Varanasi (VNS) for the ghats, Sarnath and the eastern side — but note the airport is 26 km from the river.

Lucknow · Varanasi

Kashmir & Ladakh

Srinagar (SXR) serves the Kashmir Valley, which several governments advise their citizens against travelling to — read the advisory before booking. Ladakh and Leh are excepted from that advice, and most Ladakh travellers fly Delhi–Leh direct.

South India

Kerala — four airports, one state

Kochi (COK) for central Kerala and the backwaters. Trivandrum (TRV) for the far south and Kovalam. Kozhikode (CCJ) for Malabar and Wayanad. Kannur (CNN) covers the north. They’re closer together than the state’s shape suggests, so compare fares.

Kochi · Trivandrum · Kozhikode

Tamil Nadu

Chennai (MAA) is the default gateway. Coimbatore (CJB) is much better for the Nilgiris, Tirupur and the western belt. Trichy (TRZ) is the best base for the Chola temples and has heavy Gulf and Southeast Asia service.

Chennai · Coimbatore · Trichy

Ooty & the Nilgiris

Coimbatore (CJB), without question — Ooty is 85–90 km and 3–3.5 hours up 36 hairpin bends. Nothing else is close.

Karnataka & the Deccan

Bengaluru (BLR) for Karnataka, Coorg and Mysore. Hyderabad (HYD) is the better hub for Telangana and much of the central Deccan.

Bengaluru · Hyderabad

Coastal Andhra

Visakhapatnam (VTZ) for Vizag, Araku and the northern coast — remembering the airport is now at Bhogapuram, 45 km out.

East & Northeast India

Darjeeling, Sikkim & Bhutan

Bagdogra (IXB) is the answer for all of them — Darjeeling is 2.5–3.5 hours, Gangtok 4–5. Pakyong near Gangtok has had limited and interrupted operations, so don’t rely on it. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Sikkim, obtainable at Bagdogra.

The Northeast

Guwahati (GAU) is the primary gateway for Kaziranga, Meghalaya and the wider Northeast, and the usual entry point for the permit-required states.

Guwahati guide →

Bengal

Kolkata (CCU) for the city, the Sundarbans and southern Bengal; Bagdogra for the north.

Kolkata · Bagdogra

Odisha, Puri & Konark

Bhubaneswar (BBI) is the closest airport to the Jagannath Temple at Puri and the Konark Sun Temple.

Bhubaneswar guide →

Bihar & Jharkhand

Patna (PAT) for Bihar and the Buddhist circuit. Ranchi (IXR) for Jharkhand, its waterfalls and Betla — and it’s only 7 km from the city.

West & Central India

Central India wildlife

Nagpur (NAG) for Pench and Tadoba. Jabalpur and Raipur serve other reserves — check which park gate you’re actually heading for, since the drives are long.

Chhattisgarh

Raipur (RPR) is effectively the state’s only commercial airport — for Sirpur, Bilaspur, and the long haul south to Bastar and Chitrakote Falls.

Raipur guide →

Gujarat & Maharashtra

Ahmedabad (AMD) for Gujarat. Pune (PNQ) is often easier than Mumbai for western Maharashtra, and avoids the city’s traffic entirely.

Madhya Pradesh

Indore (IDR) is the state’s busiest airport and the practical gateway for Mandu, Maheshwar and Ujjain.

Pilgrimage & heritage circuits

These trips are defined by a route rather than a city, which makes the airport choice less obvious.

The Buddhist circuit

  • Patna (PAT) — the usual arrival point for Bodh Gaya (~110 km), Nalanda, Rajgir and Vaishali.
  • Varanasi (VNS) — for Sarnath, and the natural pairing with the ghats.
  • Gaya has its own airport but service is limited and largely seasonal.

Patna · Varanasi

The Chola temples

  • Trichy (TRZ) is the best base — Thanjavur ~55 km, Kumbakonam ~90 km, with Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram between them.
  • Srirangam is 20 minutes from the terminal, so it works even on a layover.

Trichy guide →

Gulf & Hajj departures

  • Kozhikode (CCJ) and Trichy (TRZ) both run heavy Gulf schedules and serve as Hajj embarkation points.
  • Both have emigration clearance requirements for ECR passport holders travelling for work — check before you reach the airport.

Five ways people pick the wrong airport

Trusting the code alone

Codes follow the operation, not the site. VTZ moved airports entirely in 2026, and Mumbai now has two. Read the full airport name on your booking.

Believing the word “International”

Plenty of Indian airports carry international status with little or no scheduled international service — Patna, Raipur and Bagdogra among them. Confirm the route exists before planning around it.

Measuring in kilometres, not hours

Mountain and forest roads destroy distance estimates. Bagdogra to Darjeeling is 67 km and up to 3.5 hours; Coimbatore to Ooty is 90 km and just as slow.

Forgetting the airport is out of town

Some airports sit a long way from the city they name — Varanasi 26 km, Kozhikode 28 km, Bhogapuram 45 km. Others are almost in the centre, like Ranchi and Trichy.

Ignoring the season

Winter fog closes northern airports; the monsoon brings diversions in Kerala and landslides on the road to Darjeeling and Gangtok. In those windows, build in a buffer day.
